With nine classes to choose from,XCOM 2is packed with replayability. It’s got multiple ways to complete battles yet still holds the tactical element many loved from the first game. However, these tactics require an element of skill and knowledge regarding the class that gets chosen. After all, not all were created equally and each one brings its own strengths and weaknesses to this turn-based game.

It’s worth noting that preference for a specific class will be opinion based so it’s recommended the player tries each class and explores where they thrive. That being said, there are undeniably some classes that just don’t quite hold up when compared to their counterparts.
9Spark
As one of the DLC additions, many would expect these mechanical soldiers to be powerful and deadly. After all, this sort of class was incredibly powerful in the first game so it would make sense if they werethis powerful inXCOM 2.
Unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. They’re not very powerful, they’re slow to level and just fail to really stand out from the other selections. That being said, it’s still a great class if the players looking to protect the human allies due to the fact the Sparks become a bit of a target. Unfortunately, aside from taking the hits away from allies and being relatively good at melee, Spark just doesn’t hold up like it used to.

8Skirmisher
It’s a shame that the majority ofthe classes added in the DLCjust don’t live up to the main choices. They’re still useful but, just like the Sparks, the Skirmisher class doesn’t seem to do enough to make using them often worthwhile.
Nevertheless, Skirmishers still thrive in close combat and are wonderful if the enemy is in a tough location and the player needs to pull them into the open. It just feels like this class is a jack-of-all-trades but still a master-at-none. It’s more advantageous to choose a class that thrives in what the player will be up against rather than hoping these will do the job.

7Psy-Operatives
The Psy-Operatives are a decent class that can certainly hold its own in a tough battle. They act more as the supportthan any DPSor specific fighting style but can still pack enough of a punch to succeed in the final missions.

Ultimately, this class is undeniably useful and can turn the tide of a battle easily when used tactically. They just cost so much to make them feel powerful or useful in any way. That with the fact that players cannot get hold of them until relatively late in the game makes them an option many prefer to leave alone.
6Templar
The Templar class is by far the best DLC classavailable inXCOM 2.For some, this class feels almost like a copy of the Psy-Operatives but better, more reliable, and available earlier on in the game.
They’re fantastic at melee, able to possess the same power as the Psy-Operatives, and are considerably cheaper to upgrade and use on a regular basis. Almost everything the Psy-Operatives can do, the Templars can do too, just cheaper. This class is also available much sooner than its counterpart, making it an ideal investment.

5Sharpshooter
Sharpshooters are justdamage-dealing bosses. They have the capability to deal a fantastic amount of damage throughout the game, holding their own throughout. The only issue, for them to be that powerful, they have to be in their ideal terrain and the conditions have to be perfect, which they rarely are.
It’s advised to make this class your secondary or at least have a backup if the situation doesn’t lend itself towards the Sharpshooters. Nevertheless, the power they have and the uses they possess in certain battles make this class undeniably worth it if they’re used tactically.

4Specialist
The success of the Specialist all depends on howthe player prefers to playXCOM 2. If damage is the main focus then this class isn’t the best decision. However, for a player who lives off the tactics element and knows how important a good supporting class can be, the Specialists are ideal.

They have healing effects, buffs, and hacking that can dominate the battlefield while other soldiers go in and do the main damage. Along with all the support elements, the Specialist class is particularly versatile and can do damage if needed. The focus should be on its control and support though.
3Ranger
As almost the direct opposite of the Specialist, the Ranger class is ideal for players who just want to do some incredible damage to the enemy. They work well from early to late game, especially with Bladestorm, and are surprisingly great at close range with their shotguns and swords.
The only issue behind this class is the element of risk. Missing a shot or getting too up close will sometimes spell death for the Ranger so the player will need to be careful when selecting this class. Hopefully, with the right battle and the powerful elements of this class, the Ranger will take down the enemy before they have a chance to take down the team.

2Grenadier
Grenadiers are the most fun and powerful classto use throughoutXCOM 2if the player wants to do some impressive damage no matter where the enemy might be.
Using grenades this class can stay at a long distance while destroying enemies, cover, and other elements of the battlefield. This combined with the use of miniguns makes them versatile, powerful, and useful in most battles. They will most likely keep the team alive in the early game. Just watch out for the loot because their grenades will destroy it.

1Reaper
It’s no secret that the Reaper is often recognized as the strongest and best class inXCOM 2. It’s a stealthy yet powerful addition to a team that can set traps, do great damage, and stays in the shadows throughout.
It’s perfect for players who want to fight on their own terms and use the tactics this turn-based game provides to their advantage. There are very few limitations in this class and all are so insignificant that it goes without question that this class is fantastic and should be used whenever possible.
