TheDevil May Crygames have focused primarily on Dante and more recently Nero. Devil hunters by trade, the two take on odd jobs under the banner of Dante’s titular business, Devil May Cry. Most of these jobs involve investigating paranormal activities which are often brought about by demons. Since bothDante and Nero aren’t particularly fond of devils, they figure Devil May Cry is the best way they can earn a living while doing what they do best.

What the games purposefully avoid putting too much emphasis on is the most famous relation of the two devil hunters: the Dark Knight Sparda. The father of the twins Dante and Vergil and the grandfather of Nero, Sparda plays a key role in the events preceding theDevil May Crygames. His legend has become so well-known that should he ever make a full appearance in a future title, Sparda might not live up to his reputation.

Sparda’s Tale Is Already Known Throughout Devil May Cry’s World

People and demons alike know the story of Sparda. The former right-hand demon of the Dark Emperor Mundus, Sparda fought against his commander and well as his own demonic nature. He defeated Mundus and sealed him away - an act that forced Mundus’s demon hordes back into their world. To ensure the demons would not escape, Sparda sealed off a gateway to the demon world (called theTemen-ni-gru)using a hefty portion of his demonic power, a sword bearing his namesake, and an amulet he would later pass on to his wife and sons. He also used the blood of a human priestess to seal the Temen-ni-gru and made sure some of the most powerful demons were guarding its entrance.

The details following Sparda’s victory over Mundus are scarce. Sparda traveled the human world looking to seal demonic gateways and protect those being terrorized by demons. He eventually fell in love with a human woman called Eva and started a family with her. Sparda would then die of unknown circumstances, leaving his wife Eva to die at the hands of a returned Mundus and his sonsDante and Vergilto fend for themselves.

Sparda’s Appearance In The Games Would Only Lessen the Impace Of His Legend

Even though his story is known far and wide throughout theDevil May Cryworld, there are still a lot of questions about Sparda that have been left unanswered. His relationship with various demons likeNevan and Mundusas well as his immediate family hasn’t been fully explored yet. Likewise, the details surrounding his death and whether he is truly gone are the most glaring omissions in Sparda’s tale that beg people to question if he will make an appearance in a future game.

This last statement requires some exposition as Sparda has not officially made an appearance in theDevil May Cryfranchise. He is always shown in portraits, albeit with his face omitted to hide his features. Sparda has also been available asan alternate costume for Dante in certain games. While there isn’t much to go by, firsthand accounts by humans and demons have revealed that Sparda looks a lot like Dante and Vergil with powers to rival both of them.

If Sparda were to make an appearance ina futureDevil May Crygame, he would never live up to the expectations fans have for the character. For one thing, the mystery and nature of his death (which have always been constant) will be sullied as a result of his return. His appearance would also make people question where he has been all this time. Likewise, his words and actions would also be put under heavy scrutiny, as everyone has their own expectations of how he should talk and act. Legends have a way of surpassing their origins, and the Dark Knight Sparda is no exception.
