Yesterday, Sony shocked the world when it, seemingly randomly, revealed thePS5controller which is dubbed theDualSense controller. Haptic feedback, force triggers, a new “create” button instead of “share,” a built-in microphone, USB-C charging, and a new two-tone design that many may find striking are all that’s known so far. This design also comes with a rebuilt light bar that may be a significant improvement over the original, but just looking at the controller immediately dispels many expectations for the PS5 itself.

Since its official announcement and lack of a proper design reveal, many have tried imagining what the PS5 would look like. ThesePS5 conceptsrange from a direct adaptation the devkit that has circulated the internet to simple, sleek black designs to insane globe-looking consoles. Many of these feature a simple black design, while some feature some blue trim, but ultimately, it would appear that they are all off-base.

The Two-Tone PS5 DualSense Controller

ManyPlayStation fans think the PS5 will be white, and there’s a good chance of that. Simply put, a black console would look mightily strange with this controller sitting next to it, as while it’s clearly two-toned, the white is the dominant color. This would also suggest that a two-toned console itself is a possibility, as colors typically coordinate with its console upon release, but there’s some implications if it goes beyond that.

Namely, the controller itself is a striking difference from the DualShock 4 and controllers in the past, so there’s a good chance that the design of the PS5 will be equally different. The Xbox Series X, for example, looks like a PC tower, and while many thought that was odd and have comparedMicrosoft’s console to a fridge, it could be the start of a move away from the standard box. That would be especially true if PS5 did something as equally different.

Controllers and Console Design

Black consoles come with black controllers, and white consoles come with white controllers. It has almost always been this simple, and while there are special edition or custom controllers that many may buy after the fact, a solid color scheme between console and controller is expected. In other words, the design of the DualSensePS5controller means either the console itself will be unique as well or there will be some color differences. Sony may have decided that special colors are important and popular enough that a coordinated launch color scheme can be easily set aside.

After all, this two tone controller may lend itself to some interestingPS5 colors mimicking the PS4down the line, and so while this color scheme coordination may have been a factor in the past, it may not always be.

In short, the new DualSense controller throws all expectations for the PS5 out the window, as its possible avenue for designs is through the roof. It could opt for a similar design to older consoles, something new to coordinate with the controller, something complete unique, or something that wouldn’t mesh well in the past. The sky’s the limit for the PS5, and that’s what thisPS5 controllerproves.
