The summer blockbuster season has begun, and the latest offering is a standalone sequel to a 90s classic disaster movie.Twistersfollows the story of a former tornado-chaser and meteorologist who heads to Oklahoma to work with a team with new technologies at their disposal, to deal with a series of tornadoes.
Glen Powell (Hit-Man) plays a famous storm chasing YouTuber alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, and the movie was released jointly by Warner Bros and Universal Pictures worldwide on May 21, 2025. The movie has received largely positive reviews from critics with a 77% certified fresh rating and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has made over $7 million in previews.

Thehighly anticipated sequeltells the story of Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who is part of a group of storm chasers/college students based in Oklahoma. Kate, her boyfriend Jeb (Daryl McCormack), and friends, Javi (Anthony Ramos), Addy (Kiernan Shipka) and Praveen (Nik Dodani) attempt to launch barrels of sodium polyacrylate solution into a tornado in order to reduce its impact. However, they get caught up in the tornado, and Jeb, Addy and Praveen are killed as the tornado intensifies and debris flies everywhere.
Five years later, Kate is working as a Meteorologist in New York City, when Javi tracks her down, and offers her a position on his team of storm chasers with a company called Storm Par. She is reluctant at first, but agrees to take part for one week. The plan is to test a new scanning system for tornadoes in Oklahoma, and Kate joins up with the team. Upon arrival, they are joined by a rival storm chasing team headed by a You-Tube ‘tornado wrangler’ called Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). His team includes a journalist from London called Ben (Harry Hadden-Paton), who is writing a piece on storm chasing in America.
Both storm-chasing groups set out to find their first Tornado, which results in a PTSD-induced moment for Kate, who is still struggling with the loss of her friends, and she drives the truck away from the tornado. However, on the next mission, the Storm Par team successfully launches the scanning system, but the tornado blows one of the scanners away, forcing Kate and Javi to run away from the tornado, and they barely escape the incident.
They drive to a town that has been totally devastated by the tornado to help the locals, and are joined by Tyler’s crew. Kate meets a man called Marshall Riggs (Martin Born), who is a Storm Par investor, and she realizes he is profiting from all the carnage by purchasing the land where the tornadoes are hitting.
Kate gets to know Tyler a bit more, as he invites her to a rodeo, but tragedy hits when a tornado sweeps them up. They hide out until everything calms down, and when Kate sees Javi turn up at the scene, she confronts him about Riggs' motivations, and it results in Javi blaming Kate for the death of their friends.
How does Twisters end?
Kate decides to leave Javi and Storm Par, and she heads home to her mother’s farm for respite. Tyler follows her there, and he stumbles upon Kate’s research relating to the tornado disruption experiment. Tyler offers to help her do the experiment again, and she reluctantly accepts and joins Tyler and his team as a tornado develops near the town of El Reno.
Javi decides to leave Storm Par behind, and heads to El Reno to help Kate. Tyler, Kate and the rest of the team begin evacuating the locals and put them into shelters. During the struggle to get away, Tyler’s leg gets trapped by some debris, but Javi turns up just in time to rescue him with Kate’s help, and they head to a nearby movie theater to hide out.
Kate decides to leave the movie theater and drives Tyler’s truck to the center of the tornado, and launches the solution into the dreaded twister. However, the truck is overturned with her inside. Elsewhere, the tornado destroys the movie theater, but the solution takes effect and the tornado is stopped, saving many lives. Tyler, Javi, and the rest of the team rescue Kate from the truck and all is well.
Some time after the tornado, Javi drops Kate off at the airport and promises her that more research will take place after her experiment was a success. Tyler also bids farewell to Kate, who says she is returning to New York City, but utters Tyler’s famous slogan back at him:
If you feel it, chase it.
Kate enters the airport, leaving Tyler questioning what she really means, while a parking attendant is pressuring him to move his truck. Tyler leaves his truck after digging it into the ground and catches up with Kate, as the airport PA announces that all flights are delayed due to strong winds.
Is there a post credits scene?
Yes, there is a post credits scene that sees Kate, Tyler, and Javi becoming business partners, as they continue their research towards advancing the protection against the disruption that a tornado causes. Kate and Tyler’s romantic entanglement is left ambiguous, but a sequel could develop this plot point in more detail, as well as put them in the eye of a new storm.
