Director James Gunn is still riding high on the success ofThe Suicide Squadand continues to respond to fan questions on social media. In a recent interaction with a few fans, Gunn decided to share his wisdom and give some great advice to aspiring filmmakers.
It all began when one of Gunn’s Twitter followers complimentedThe Suicide Squaddirector for his work so far and asked if he could share any tips to help him become a director or a screenplay writer.Gunn took this opportunity to not only helpthe fan but provide valuable advice to other followers asking similar questions.

“Finish what you start,” was the main takeaway from the conversation. The thread of conversation that was then posted byGunn on Twitter quoted several other questionsthat fans had asked. It began with Gunn writing, “No matter how hard it is, and how much you don’t want to, and how much every fiber in your being is fighting the impulse not to, finish what you start.” After reading this, when one fan asked what happens if “it sucks,” Gunn was quick to remind him that “it doesn’t matter.”
In Gunn’s opinion, “your judgments of your own work are irrelevant.” If one was writing professionally, it matters what other people think of the individual’s work, rather than them worrying about whether it is good enough or not. However, if people are constantly worrying about others and their opinion, they “aren’t really in the creative space.” In Gunn’s words, the “creative space exists outside all that.”
A lot of artists might feel hesitant to begin creating, butGunn advises that they should instead focuson the process of creating and they should automatically reach the “perfect headspace” for it. While artists struggle to get past their inhibitions, they are wasting precious time and effort to create something magical.
Gunn suggests working through the self-doubt, referring to it as “the storm,” because once the artists are done with the creative process, they will find themselves “on the other side of the storm,” with the work that they will cherish the most because it didn’t come easy. As the filmmaker behind such hits astheGuardians of the Galaxyfilms, Gunn’s advice is certainly worth heeding.
