Fans of crime thrillers by Steven Soderbergh such asOcean’s ElevenandTrafficare about to receive a new film to be excited about. Warner Bros. has released a brief teaser for Soderbergh’s upcoming gangster flickNo Sudden Move, which is set for release on thestreaming service HBO Maxlater this Summer.
Steven Soderbergh is widely regarded as one of the most brazenly independent voices in contemporary American cinema. Responsible for classics such asSex, Lies, & VideotapeandErin Brockovich, Soderbergh not only knows how to tell great stories, but he often chooses to tell them in innovative ways, as he did when using an iPhone during the production of his filmsUnsaneandHigh Flying Bird.

A year ago, Soderbergh made headlines when he signed afirst-look deal with HBO & HBO MAX, andNo Sudden Movewill be the second Soderbergh film to release exclusively on the platform followingLet Them All Talk. The upcoming crime thriller brings Soderbergh back to familiar material for the director while also offering a fresh and exciting narrative. The film takes place in 1954 Detroit and follows a group of criminals who are hired to steal what they thought was a simple document–but the document embroils the criminals in something far more complicated and dangerous than any of them had imagined.
In asimilar casting strategy to that ofKnives Out,No Sudden Movebrings together an exciting selection of A-list actors to appeal to moviegoers by the strength of the ensemble. Don Cheadle leads a cast that includes Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Kieran Culkin, Ray Liotta, Brendan Fraser, Amy Seimetz, Noah Jupe, and Julia Fox (who is acting in her first high-profile role since her breakthrough performance in the Adam Sandler filmUncut Gems). In addition to this cast,No Sudden Movewas written by Ed Solomon, the veteran screenwriter behind memorable titles such asMen in Black,Now You See Me, andBill & Ted Face the Music.
HBO Max has steadily been growing its library of engaging original film content since last year. Feature film titles that are exclusive on the service include the Melissa McCarthy comedySuperintelligence, Robert Zemeckis’sThe Witches, andZack Snyder’s Justice League. The streamer is expected to add more feature films to its exclusive content lineup as time goes on. HBO Max already boasts a stunning lineup of quality content from providers such as DC, Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, and Studio Ghibli, and a strong set of original films could help HBO Max become more of a formidable opponent in the streaming wars.
Competing in the streaming wars will be easier said than done, however. Competitors such as Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ are also offering excellent content with enough consistency to make it harder for emerging streamers to break in. But with original films such asNo Sudden Move, HBO Max might just have a chance.
No Sudden Movewill premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 18th, 2021 before releasing onto HBO Max on July 1st, 2021.
