Summary
AStarfieldplayer on PC has used console commands that make it possible for them to leave their ship while in space, allowing them to spacewalk.Starfieldis the latest RPG from Bethesda Game Studios led by Todd Howard. As the studio’s first single-player RPG sinceFallout 4in 2015,Starfieldhas enjoyed early success, accumulating over six million players in just two days and becoming Bethesda’s biggest launch ever.
In the very long lead-up toStarfield’s release, there had been much discourse about what could be possible in a galaxy-spanning space RPG made by Bethesda Game Studios. Over time, certain elements of the game had become officially revealed and confirmed by Bethesda, such asStarfieldfeaturing the studio’slargest city ever in New Atlantis, being able to build and crew ships, engaging in space combat, and being able to explore over 1,000 moons and planets across over 100 star systems. As this information trickled out over the years, it became clear thatStarfieldwas going to be Bethesda’s most ambitious title to date. While these promising elements of the game dominated the conversations surrounding it, the question of whether players would be able to spacewalk outside of their ship largely flew under the radar asStarfield’s release approached.

OneStarfieldplayer has been able to spacewalk outside The Frontierwith the help of console commands on PC. WeirdConcern4666 shared footage on theStarfieldsubreddit of a player floating and boosting around outside their ship in the middle of an asteroid belt. It’s unknown the system the player is doing this in, but the planet or moon they’re orbiting takes on a light orange hue. In the clip, the player was able to get up close to some of the asteroids and at one point got as far away as nearly 1500 meters from the ship.
While unseen in the video, Rebs Gaming posted the same clip to Twitter and claimed that the player was also able to walk on the asteroids and even create outposts on them. Rebs Gaming went on to share the console commands under the tweet so PC players can try it out for themselves. Many commenters under the Reddit post and Red Gaming’s tweet pointed out that sinceStarfieldshipped with the ability to spacewalk with the use of console commands on PC, the featurewas likely cut by Bethesdaat some point during development. This potential omission makes sense considering there wouldn’t have been much to do while spacewalking outside of one’s ship, unless Bethesda pivoted into more of a simulator direction, letting players repair and maintain their ships from the outside.
Many believe spacewalking inStarfieldwould make for an excellent PC mod, as Bethesda has been open to its very active modding community for years at this point. However, for fans on consoles, waiting on Bethesda to introduce spacewalking as part of an official update or DLC would be the best bet. Though, withStarfieldfresh out the doorit’ll likely be some time before any of Bethesda’s future plans for the title are revealed.
Starfieldis available now for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
