Summary

With the return ofStar Warsin 2015, and the beginning of the new Disney era for the franchise, fans expected there to be a swell of newStar Warsgames, just like there was with theStar Warsprequel trilogy back in the early-mid 2000s. However, they were sorely mistaken. Rather ironically, 2015 was one of the slowest years forStar Warsgames ever, with justEA’sStar Wars BattlefrontandGalaxy of Heroesbeing the only major titles to release. This surprising lack ofStar Warsgames has continued ever since, but with the release of the recentStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, and the upcoming release ofStar Wars Outlaws, it looks like a renaissance is about to occur.

Following on from the surprisingly excellentStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorhas managed to be a standout game this year, despite some extremely tough competition. WithStar Wars Outlawsreportedly dropping in 2024, the future is looking bright forStar Warsvideo game fans. And althoughStar Warsvideo game fatigue is a worry for some players,Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorandStar Wars Outlawsaren’t a cause for concern, as they both compliment each other perfectly.

Star Wars Outlaws and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

Star Wars OutlawsandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorare both huge AAA games set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Both games are set during the Galactic Civil War, with the Empire having a strong presence throughout both experiences. It also seems likely that some characters fromRespawn’sStar Wars Jediseriescould crop up inStar Wars Outlaws, and with themes of hope and unity being theStar Warsfranchise’s whole shtick, it seems likely that both video games might dabble in similar themes. But while bothStar Wars OutlawsandStar Wars Jedi: Survivorwill probably share some strong similarities, they’ll also have some key differences and will balance out the other in some pretty important ways.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s story is on the more bombastic, grandiose side of things. Players take control ofCal Kestis, a Jedi that survived Order 66and is currently on the run from the Empire.Jedi: Survivor’s story is full of high-stakes moments, ranging from stealing information in the heart of the Empire’s capital planet of Coruscant to fighting off Darth Vader himself during a fully-fledged Empire invasion on Jedha. By the timeStar Wars Jedi: Survivorhas wrapped up, there are several key events that could have a major impact on theStar Warsuniverse moving forward.

Star Wars Outlaws, on the other hand, appears to be a much more personal story. From what fans have seen so far,Star Wars Outlawsseems to put players in the boots ofKay Vess, a fresh-faced smugglerlooking to make her fortune by scheming her way across the galaxy. While players will come into contact with the Empire, they’re not being actively hunted down from the get-go, and larger-than-life figures like Darth Vader probably aren’t going to make major appearances during the story. Though it’ll still probably be an intense and riveting journey,Star Wars Outlawsmight be a bit more low-stakes when compared to theStar Wars Jediseries, acting as the perfect balancing point.

This same level of balance can be found in both titles' gameplay as well. WhileStar Wars Jedi: Survivordoes feature some open-world elements, it’s primarily a story-focused game with Metroidvania level design.Star Wars Outlaws, on the other hand, will apparently be a fully-fledged Ubisoft open-world RPG, letting players explore multiple open-world planets and take to space.Jedi: Survivor’s Soulslike combat will also vary greatly fromStar Wars Outlaws' more run-and-gun third-person shooter gameplay, again showing how both games will likely complement each other very well.

Star Wars Outlawsreleases in 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
