Summary
Every player has their favorite moment or level from a popularPlayStationgame, and a new patent from Sony could allow them to replay them over again without having to start a new campaign. There have beenmany promising PlayStation patentsfiled over the past few years, offering up new features and peripherals that could either increase player immersion or help make gaming in general more accessible to everyone.
One option many gamers would like is the ability to replay a particular story chapter after finishing their main playthrough.Certain story-based PlayStation titleslike the originalMarvel’s Spider-Manalready include the option to jump into a particular section of their story after completing them, but this is hardly a universal standard. These days, most of the biggest video game story moments can be watched in clips online, but many gamers feel that this is hardly a substitute for re-experiencing them from behind a controller.

A new patent filed directly from Sony could change that for PlayStation 5 gamers going forward. As reported byExputer, this new patent is officially dubbed “CONTENT STREAMING WITH GAMEPLAY LAUNCH” and describes a system that would add “trigger points” to certain cutscenes and story moments throughout a game’s primary campaign. This would allow the player to jump back and forth to these marked moments any time they wish, similar to how Blu-ray viewers can skip ahead in a movie by accessing its “Scene Selection” menu.
Sony also mentions how this system could let players redoin-game choices in titles likeDetroit: Become Humanby allowing them to go back to the point where said choices were made and pick a different option instead. Sony’s document argues that this would be a boon for players who want to go on a different narrative path without having to start a new game from the very beginning.

Sure enough, the ability to freely move between certain story chapters and replay them is a popular feature in first-partyPlayStation 5games likeDetroit: Become HumanandUntil Dawn, but it remains sorely missing in narrative-heavy titles likeGod of War: Ragnarokand the recently releasedMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. Many fans would like the option to go back and replay a certain boss battle or setpiece moment without having to start the game over from scratch, and this latest Sony patent could give them the option to do just that should it be implemented.
