Despite presentations from the big three already, Nintendo, Xbox, andPlayStation’s 2023 announcements have been a little lacking so far, and that’s especially true for the latter. WhileXbox gave lengthy updates onRedfall, Forza Motorsport, and more, and Nintendo officially revealedPikmin 4and DLC forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, PlayStation’s recent State of Play was a bit of a disappointment, with barely any big announcements or updates. But hopefully, all this means is that Sony is gearing up for one hell of a PlayStation Showcase later in the year.
WhileNintendo is skipping E3 this yearalongside Microsoft and Sony, they all tend to host their own presentations around the same time, with Sony’s being the long-running PlayStation Showcase. Sony usually makes great use of this event, unveiling some of its biggest upcoming games, and providing extensive updates on the most anticipated releases. And if the recent State of Play is anything to go by, then Sony could be saving up for a massive PlayStation Showcase.

Sony Seems to be Holding Back for a Big PlayStation Showcase
Sony’s most recent State of Play was fairly disappointing across the board. While fans got a few character announcements forStreet Fighter 6, and a new gameplay trailer forResident Evil 4 Remakewas shown off, that was about it in terms of big video game reveals, aside from the 15-minuteSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguedeep-dive, which had its own set of issues. This most recent State of Play had a lot of announcements that felt like filler, and while it’s great to learn thatTchiais coming to PlayStation Plus Extra on day one, that could have easily been revealed in a PlayStation Blog post.
The number of highly anticipated games that PlayStation has in development right now is staggering, and their lack of appearance at the recent State of Play was a big point of confusion. Though some highly-anticipated PlayStation titles are still in the early stages of development, and fans won’t likely see them for a while, Sony has plenty of games gearing up for release later this year, and it’s a little confusing thatthe recent State of Playdidn’t show them off in any regard. But this has led many to believe that Sony is gearing up for a pretty monumental PlayStation Showcase later this year.
The next PlayStation Showcase could end up showing off more exclusive titles than ever before.Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is extremely likely to appear during the next PlayStation Showcase, with Sony and Insomniac likely wanting to hold off until it gets closer to its projected Fall release date. Another big upcoming PlayStation title is theSilent Hill 2remake, which doesn’t have a release window yet, but could receive another trailer.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthis slated for a Winter 2023 release, making a full gameplay reveal likely for the next PlayStation Showcase. Naughty Dog’slong-awaitedThe Last of Usmultiplayer gamealso has to be right around the corner now. And that’s just scratching the surface.
Sony also has a plethora of completely unannounced first-party projects in the works that could potentially receive a trailer in an upcoming PlayStation Showcase. Bungie, for a start, has several first-person shooters apparently in the works for Sony, potentially including some live-service ones.Returnaldeveloper Housemarque has confirmed it’s working on anotherPlayStationproject, as hasBlood and Truth’s London Studio. Sucker Punch is also working on a new game, with rumors suggesting it’ll be aGhost of Tsushimasequel. There are plenty of PlayStation first-party games on the horizon, and there’s a big potential that at least a few of them are revealed during the next PlayStation Showcase.
