Update: DentyMods1 has since updated their original post revealing that they managed to get their character and save data back. However, they apparently weren’t able to get all of it, as their account appears to be rolled back to about 30 minutes before getting hit with an error.

Original story follows.

Many in theDestiny 2community have been left feeling frustrated and confused over frequent server outages and error codes recently, but some players are now claiming that their characters and save data are missing according to Bungie services. These sorts of character absence bugs may be familiar to someDestiny 2players, as similar issues were prevalent for a short time during the lead up to the game’s latest expansion.

Connectivity problems have spiked forDestiny 2players across the world over the past couple of days as the game’s servers have experienced constant outages and stability issues, resulting in countless fans unable to log in and play the game at all. This has unsurprisingly led to widespread complaints among the game’s massive community which have only continued to grow louder in the absence of any significant communication from the developers at Bungie. Several other periods of outage have occurred over the past few weeks with a seemingly greater frequency than usual, and manyDestiny 2players have grown impatientwith the constant emergency maintenance downtimes that often see sizable extensions.

Though the recent maintenance periods and hotfix patches have cleared up some of the bugs that were brought inalongsideDestiny 2: Lightfallin February, many players have pointed out that these hotfixes are struggling to keep up with the influx of new issues that make their way into the game, with some even claiming that these patches are doing more harm than good toDestiny 2. Amid the many service issues, one player on Reddit named DentyMods1 has made a popular post claiming they found that their characters, save data, and progress had gone missing after they attempted to log into the game. Suspecting that fellow fans would doubt their claims, the player even provided several images proving that their save data didn’t exist according to Bungie services.

The post quickly gained traction, leading other players to claim that they or their friends had experienced the same issue only for them to be dismissed by other players or Bungie. Bungie has since replied claiming awareness of such issues, and has suggested that missing characters are merely a result of server communication problems and that they are actually safe. This debacle might call to mind the storm ofDestiny 2character loss claimsthat thrived shortly before the release ofLightfall, and while some players' claims have previously proven to be false, the scary number of related incidents should be taken seriously both by Bungie and the community.

Some fans are frustrated over the lack of prior communication on the part of the developers, but whatever the case, players experiencing missing characters or save data would do well to avoid creating any new characters for the time being, as this has proven to complicate the process of retrieving missing data should it be necessary. Anotherhotfix forDestiny 2is set to go live when maintenance ends, leaving many fans hopeful that the server issues will soon be rectified.

Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
