The nameElder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis almost synonymous with the modern RPG. Although much of its popularity stems from the litany of amusing bugs that occur frequently throughout Tamriel, it’s stillone of the most immersive open world gamesout there. It’s true that, after more than ten years, Bethesda’s epic has aged somewhat. It was breathtaking upon release, but graphics have advanced since then. Of course, it still looks splendid, but there are mods out there which can really keep the game looking modern and beautiful.

Take the “SNRP Landscapes” mod by Skurkbro, as spotted by DSO Gaming. This user has created a series of high-definition textures for the Special Edition ofSkyrim. More specifically, as the name implies, the add-on improves the overall visuals for the game’s landscapes. A series of images uploaded to Nexus Mods show the work that’s been put into the project, and the result is pretty spectacular, giving the world a more defined, crisper look that breathes new life into this decade-oldElder Scrollsentry.

This mod is actually a continuation of another one by the same user, called “Skurkbro’s Nextgen Retexture Project”, though the modder says this latest one is standalone. These landscape textures cover all of the game’s map, includingSolstheim from theSkyrim: DragonbornDLC, as well as Soul Cairn, the Oblivion plane from theDawnguardexpansion. Skurkbro does say that, while this texture pack can be installed without any others, it is recommended to use the Blended Roads mod alongside it, and that players should not use “SNRP Landscapes” in conjunction with other packs that don’t support terrain parallax.

There are so manyinteresting mods out there forSkyrim, that it’s almost possible to turn it into a different game. The visual upgrades, bug fixes, new additions, and general tweaks to the gameplay, are what’s keeping the game popular these days. While there’s no official word on whenTheElder Scrolls 6will be making its appearance, fans will be sticking with this latest entry in the long-running RPG franchise.

Suffice it to say, it’s been a mainstay in the gaming world ever since dropping in 2011. For some, it’s one of thosevideo games that warrant a memory wipe. Fans have played the opening sections ofSkyrimso often now, that many wish they could forget, so they can experience it all over again for the first time. There are not many games that can hope for such kudos, but as long as there are fans willing to play it, the modding community will seemingly keep looking for ways to improve it for others.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
