The gaming industry is filled to brim with rumors, especially for upcoming releases or games currently in development. Whether it be for Nintendo, PlayStation, orXbox, there’s a lot that can be believed or ignored. The latest rumor involves the Canadian devloper Compulsion Games, the studio behind the survival horror gameWe Happy Fewreleased in 2016. As the company is now wrapping up it’s work on the game, it is rumored that its next project will be a Dark Fantasy adventure exclusive to the Xbox.
Microsoft acquired Compulsion Games in 2018, which was seen as a big move to push its first party gaming intiative. Other studios that were acquired include Undead Labs, Playground Games, and Ninja Theory, which had developed the award winningHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Compulsion Games has been working on a mysterious project ever since the completion of its debut game, which is evidenced in an interview regarding the studio’s growth.

In an interview with French website Xbox Squad, Naila Hadjas, a PR Manager from Compulsion Games explains the changes made in the past few years. One of which was that the development team has reportedly doubled in size since the release ofWe Happy Few. Furthermore, the team’s next step is to “expand our zany universe” by making games in strange, underutilized settings. This new project supposedly began after the completion ofWe Happy Few’s DLC in 2019, and then full production of the game a few months after that.
When asked about the next game that Compulsion Games was working on, Hadjas explains that it will be a narrative, third-person story game, which is very different fromWe Happy Few, which was morerogue-like in natureand required community feedback. This includes the implementation of the game’s overall story, which was gradually added in when they received praise for the world.
The interview with Hadjas wraps up with how Microsoft has supported the studio in regards to the direction, resources, and departments that are helping refine this new project. In a completely separate rumor, leaker Klobrille hints that Compulsion Games is indeed working on adark fantasy action title, corraborating the title’s existence that it will be a third-person adventure. While it may be a while before any other news is seen from Compulsion Games, it’s something that sounds very exciting forXboxfans in the future.
