The next character to enter theSuper Smash Bros.Ultimatecompetition may be announced next month, with a credible leaker posting information about plars for a Nintendo Direct scheduled for August. This would be the 77th addition to the roster and 8th DLC fighter, withMin Min from the titleArmsaddedat the end of June.
In a post by Nintendo Direct leaker C. Tsubasa on Resetera, they explain that fans should “wait for August,” for the next Direct, and that there is “nothing [planned] for the rest of this month.” This comes after a late announcement of a Direct Mini, featuring third-party partners' games, and spanning only 8 minutes. This was on topof a Japanese Direct, which revealed even more information about upcoming games. While the leaker did not specify what would be revealed, user NateDrake followed up by explaining that Nintendo “will be leaning on Mario pretty hard this holiday.”

Fans are speculating that this Direct could bring the next fighter in theSmash Bros. Ultimatelineup, as the most recent addition would have been out for over a month. On top of this, the ‘fighter’ tab was removed from theSmashwebsite, which usually signals that a new character is set to be announced. As this rumor is unconfirmed, it is hard to tell which fighter will be added to the game, or if the Direct will even be occurring.
According to NateDrake, there won’t even be a Nintendo Direct in August, explaining that he has “not heard of any General Direct for August,” but confirms that “A Mario game is slated for September.” With a newSuper Mariogame rumored to be so close to release, it would make sense that a Direct would occur fairly soon, as Nintendo is known to make short notice-reveals. What this game will be is unknown, but there has been a mountain of speculation that Nintendo intends to remastera bunch ofMariotitlesfrom earlier consoles. This update by NateDrake could be the beginning of its plans to bring olderSuper Mariogames to the Switch.
With Nintendo revealing many new games, including the recently announcedPokemon UniteMOBA game, it would not be out of the realm of possibility that a newSmash Bros.character is next on the list. But with no confirmation of even an August Direct, all of this information is up in the air until Nintendo confirms it.
