A remake ofResident Evil 4has been rumored to be in development for some time now. Given the recent surge of classicResident Evilremakes,Resident Evil 4seems to be the most logical next step. However, that next step could potentially be taken without the assistance of one key figure that made the originalResident Evil 4resonate with so many people.
For many fans of the series,Resident Evil 4is a very important game. It is arguably the entry that instilled modernity into theResident Evilseries. The game did away with tank controls, and instead of alternating between camera angles there was one fixed camera perspective behind the player. It was also the first mainline installment in the series to occur outside of Raccoon City.

Shinji Mikami is not only the director of the originalResident Evil 4, but was also the game director behind the very firstResident Evil. Since that time, Mikami has served as a prominent figure in most the mainlineResident Evilgames, but according to Mikami in a recent interview with Variety, he has not been contacted in any way with regards to a remake ofResident Evil 4.
In all fairness, it’s impossible to know whereCapcomis at in terms of the development process, so it’s possible that the studio could reach out to Mikami in the future. However, Mikami has work at his own studio, Tango Gameworks, to contend with as well. It would be interesting to see what kind of impact he could have on the remake considering that he played a key role in making the fourth installment what it is.
Then again, considering the extremely quick turnaround of theResident Evil 3remake, releasing a little over a year after the launch of theResident Evil 2remake, it’s possible that Capcom won’t reach out to Mikami, which may not be a bad thing. Mikami mentioned in the interview with Variety how impressed he was with how well Capcom is handling the remakes of its classic games.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how theResident Evil 4remake turns out. If the previous remakes are any indication, it’s possible that Capcom will alter the story ofResident Evil 4in some way considering theamount of missing content there is inResident Evil 2. Though, some narrative changes could help the remake stand out against the original game, considering the amount of love and popularity it received.
Resident Evil 4is allegedly in development.
