Since leavingNintendoin 2019, Reggie Fils-Aimé has continued to make an impact within the gaming sphere. Outside of hisrole on GameStop’s Board of Directorsas the company continues to decline, the former Nintendo of America president also joined forces with the New York Videogame Critics' Circle, which provides services for homeless students and hosts a yearly awards show to raise additional funds for their activities.
In a new statement released today, the Critics' Circle announced that it will ask Fils-Aimé to co-host next year’s tenth New York Game Awards with its president and founder, Harold Goldberg. Previously,Fils-Aimé and Goldberg collaborated on a seven-episode podcast seriesto raise money for the New York Videogame Critics' outreach efforts to New York high school students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many recent video game showcases and events,the 2021 New York Game Awardswill be hosted virtually on January 26. According to Fils-Aimé, next year’s show will celebrate the Awards' tenth anniversary and feature gaming industry professionals that both long-time gamers and new fans alike will recognize. Goldberg chimed in, stating that one of the advantages of a virtual event is the ability to feature more iconic figures in the video game industry.
Goldberg also teased some upcoming news about the ceremony’s Andrew Yoon Legend Award, which Fils-Aimé received in 2019. While both hosts promised to celebrate “the best in gaming” this year, The ex-Nintendoexecutive also ended the statement by also reminding readers of the New York Game Awards' charitable motives - to remind viewers of the New York Videogame Critics' Circle’s long-running mentor and support program.
Although the New York Game Awards' choice to move entirely online is unsurprising, it may also be beneficial for the Critics' Circle’s fundraising efforts during the event.While in-person events like E3have been languishing in recent years, showcases from major developers regularly receive high viewing figures and extra exposure. If the Awards choose to stream on Twitch like in recent years, a boost in viewers might allow the New York Videogame Critics' Circle to receive more support and exposure.
After confirming an illustrious Video Game Hall of Famer to headline its show, it will be interesting to see how this year’s New York Game Awards will ultimately play out, andwhich games the Critics' Circle will choose to featurethis year. Hopefully, this year’s show will allow Goldberg and Fils-Aimé to raise more awareness for underserved communities.
The 10th Annual New York Game Awardswill be broadcast online on June 20, 2025.
