Hunting is a massive aspect of theRed Dead Redemptionfranchise, playing perfectly into the IP’s themes of survival and untamed frontiers. In the firstRed Dead Redemption, hunting animals held its biggest benefit in allowing the player to skin their prey and sell their resources, such as pelts, to merchants across the game world. Animal combat is also often unavoidable, with many ofRed Dead Redemption’s animals posing serious threats to the player in the wild.

Red Dead Redemption 2built upon hunting in a huge way, introducing a pelt quality mechanic which meant players had to be more careful in how they hunt. InRDR2, players are encouraged to use the likes of arrows or purposely crafted ammunition when hunting certain animals, depending on their size. However, this mechanic does not apply to therare legendary animals that populateRed Dead Redemption 2, with the player obtaining legendary pelts for successfully killing and skinning them.

RDR2boasts 16 legendary animals in total, with their pelts being worth much more than their standard counterparts. Their pelts can additionally be used to create legendary clothing, working hand in hand withRDR2’s focus on character customization. Legendary animals can only be killed and looted once per playthrough, creating tense and challenging interactions that should carry forward to future installments.

Not a lot is currently known aboutRed Dead Redemption 3, but the huge success of the franchise gives a good probability that Rockstar will eventually produce a sequel.A lot of debate is already circulating aboutRDR3, with some fans being torn between what kind of approach the game should take.

A more modern setting would allow the franchise to explore some fascinating narratives, yet this would do away with a lot of the Wild West tropes that make the IP so engaging. Hunting would be one element that would lose credibility with such a setting, along with the allure of its legendary pelts. In this way, it seems important that Rockstar maintains an older setting, along with the popular legendary pelts ofRDR2.

With it being likely thatRDR3will possess a greater scale than its predecessor, the frequency and variety of its legendary animals can be even greater. IfRDR3possesses environments that the franchise has not extensively explored, then entirely new legendary animals could be featured authentically.

Legendary animals also played a big part inRed Dead Online, withRDR3most likely boasting its own multiplayer mode. This multiplayer will be hoping to exceed the short-lived live service ofRed Dead Online, and having legendary animals appear as limited-time community events could be very popular. With hunting offering so much toRed Dead Redemption’s core gameplay, the increased dynamic that legendary animals add is something that cannot be overlooked for a sequel.
