ThePokémonfranchise has worn a lot of hats over the years. Aide from the mainline monster taming RPGs,Pokémongames have included a MOBA, a photography based rail shooter, and evena competitivePokémonfighting game.
One of the more fondly remembered spinoffs isPokémon Puzzle Leaguefor the Nintendo 64. This frantic match 3 puzzle game was a pokemon flavored reskin of the classicPanel de Pon/Tetris Attack!, and is one of the best versions of that title.

Now that Nintendo has placedPokémon Puzzle Leaguein its Nintendo Switch Online service, the game is once again widely accessible. And it’s such a faithful port that it even includes the original cartridge’s cheat codes.
How to Input Pokémon Puzzle League’s Cheats
Every one of the game’s cheat codes has the same format. Players just need to head to the correct screen, hold ZL, and then input a specific button combination on their controller. The combination normally spells out a word, so it should be easy to remember it. If the player is playing onthe original N64 controllerinstead of using the switch, all they need to do is replace ZL with Z to enter these codes.
Increased Difficulty Modes
This cheat will unlock harder difficulties for the One Player Stadium mode, where players fight through the game’s titular puzzle league. To unlock Very Hard mode, the player just needs to go to difficulty select, then hold ZL while pressing L, L, A, B. Super Hard is unlocked the same way, holding ZL while pressing R, L, A, B.
Start Marathon Mode from Level 50-99
Marathon mode is, as the name suggests, the game’s endurance challenge. Players fight to clear the continuously rising blocks, which come faster and faster as time goes on. Players don’t have to start at level 1, but normally they are limited to starting at level 50. To start with a higher level, they just need to go to the title screen, hold ZL, and press B, A, L, L.
Unlock All Puzzles in University Mode
University mode presents players with preset puzzles that they have a limited number of moves to complete. Normally, players need to finish previous puzzles to unlock the later ones, but they can unlock them all at once by going to the title screen, holding ZL, and pressing A, B, R, A, A, B, R, A,spelling out “Abra Abra”.
Unlock All Trainers in 2 Player Mode.
In 2 Player mode, players choose which trainer they want to play as before entering the match. There aren’t any advantages of one trainer over another, so it’s purely aesthetic. Most are unlocked in the one player arena, but players can unlock them all by going to trainer select, and holding ZL, L, and R at the same time on both controllers. They will probably need a second pair of hands for this.
Unlock Mewtwo Stage in Multiplayer
Mewtwo is the game’s final boss in single player, and the battle against him has a unique stage. This stage can be used in the multiplayer mode by going to trainer select, holding ZL, and pressing B, Up, L, B, A, Start, A, Up, R, spelling out “Bulbasaur.”
