Players do a double take onPokemonXandYNPCs after one fan points out a peculiar detail that encourages players to reopen the games to take another look. The newfound detail raises questions about thePokemon X and Yworld as players experience it, adding further narrative and potential lore related insights even if it was not entirely intended by its creators.PokemonX and Yare the sixth generationPokemongamesthat were released on the Nintendo 3DS back in 2013. It was the first time that the series made a significant jump into the 3D space, and was praised for its innovation in gameplay and design. The games also offered the furthest customization options thus far in aPokemonseries by allowing players to design their avatar in various ways.Pokemonhas always been known for its archetypical NPCs that either battle against you in the fields, such as school children trainers, or offer fun dialogues in the towns scattered across the map. Despite the games being out for a while, fans are continuously discovering new things about the Kalos region and its inhabitants.RELATED:Pokemon Fan Art Shows Ghost-type Trainer Complete With Ghost Eevee EvolutionAPokemonfan by the name of Touya! noticed a fun and interesting detail regarding theNPCs inPokemonX and Y. The schoolboy and schoolgirl characters are the same design as the scientists, only they are illustrated to be more adult looking. In other words, each design of the scientists are illustrated with nuance to make them appear to be older versions of the same character. Similarly, the same can be said for the Pokemon rangers who are younger versions of their veteran counterparts.

Speculation on what lore implications this could have is fun to think about. Although the illustrations seem to be older versions of the younger NPC characters, they should not be grown up versions of the same character, as they both exist in generation six simultaneously. It could be that they are relatives, or parents of their younger looking counterparts, or it could have something to do withsome of the more wildPokemontheoriesregarding a certain item that unlocks a time travel feature inPokemonXandY.

There appears to be a wide range of speculation and reactions from fans, such as those who are blown away by the comparison to those who do not see the similarities and have brushed it off as the typical mental image of what these NPC’s would look like given their professions. As a result, the illustrators could have just used the younger version designs as a template for other NPCs. Either way, it is up to the fans to decide what this might mean, narratively speaking, for there doesn’t seem to be anything definitively that pushes one explanation over another. After all, it would not be the first time thatPokemonfan theories have made mind-blowing connectionsexpanding its world.
