InPokémongames, new trainers are given a rare Pokémon by their respective professors before going on a long journey around their region. These starters come in three types: Water, Grass, and Fire. Fire-types are some of the most instantly recognizablePokémonand have been sinceRed and Blue.

Fire-types are a must-have for any team. Considering how many weeds and bugs trainers will have to blast through, picking up one of them is a no-brainer. However, there are some strange quirks with some of the most popular Fire-types that just don’t make a whole lot of sense. This list will serve to ask ten of those burning questions about these fiery yet lovable Pokémon.

10How Would Volcarona Wear The Heavy-Duty Boots?

Volcarona is a Pokémon that many trainers who were active in WiFi battles or on Pokémon Showdown probably remember. This flaming moth has great stats and an incredible selection of moves and was a bane to any unprepared team. It’s strong enough that it feels likeit should be a pseudo-legendary, but doesn’t quite make the cut. This bug only fears one thing: tiny rocks.

The counter to those tiny rocks would be found inSword and Shield’s Heavy-Duty Boots, which negates field hazards. Now, Volcarona hasn’t obtained its green card yet to go to Galar, but once it does, it’s going to want these boots. There’s only one question to ask: how would it even wear them?

9Why Doesn’t Torkoal Learn Overheat?

When thinking about Fire-type attacks, one of the first that may come to mind is Overheat. This attack was the reward for beating Flannery inRuby and Sapphire, and her Torkoal used it to deal immense damage. Overheat itself is a risky move, reducing the user’s own stats likeother similarly powerful moves.

Yet, Torkoal doesn’t actually learn this move naturally. In fact, no Fire-type untilBlack and Whitelearned Overheat through leveling up. It’s funny that one of Torkoal’s most iconic moves is a move it doesn’t even learn naturally.

8What Is The Purpose Of Darmanitan’s Zen Form?

Darmanitan is one of the well-remembered Fire-types from Unova. Known for its incredible strength, this Pokémon is a serious breaker of walls and can be an unstoppable force if given the chance. It may have a niche, but it feels that niche excellently in terms of competitive strength, even inPokémon Go.

This Pokémon also has the ability to turn into a statue for some reason. It’s said that the Zen Mode allows Darmanitan to store energy. Yet, aside from being a neat gimmick, it has no practical use in and out of combat. It seems weird that it even has the ability to go into Zen Mode at all.

7What Even Is the Magmarizer?

Magmortar is a strange Pokémon. It is the evolved form of Magmar and, despite having some sweet arm-cannons,isn’t exactly a reliable powerhouse. There likely aren’t too many trainers that was use Magmortar over a similar Fire-type. While Magmortar is certainly weird, even weirder is the Magmarizer.

This item is required to evolve Magmar, but there are no descriptions about what exactly the Magmarizer is in the world ofPokémon. It just seems like an odd addition to force another trade evolution.

6Why Does Blaziken Have A  Humanoid Appearance?

Blaziken, the final evolution of Torchic, is many things. It was the first Fire/Fighting starter, which was so successful Game Freak did the typing again… twice. It’s a featured Pokémon inPokken Tournamentand wassnubbedforSword and Shield.  It has a cool Mega Evolution. It’s also distinctly human-like despite not being in the egg group for human-like Pokémon.

Neither of its prior evolutions look distinctly human, but for some reason Blakizen just looks like someone in a costume. It’s a strange design choice but, considering how many Pokémon there are like it now, it must be a popular one.

5Are Cinderace Allowed In Traditional Sports As Partners?

Cinderace is the final evolution of Galar’s Scorbunny and is obviously designed based on footballers. Its signature move, Pyro Ball, is literally Cinderace using this footballer origin in combat. It also is probably the strongest of Galar’s starter Pokémon, essentially becoming the next Greninja in terms of viability.

But its design poses another question, could a Cinderace participate in a traditional sporting event. Without the Pokéathlon making a return, it may never be confirmed, but it wouldn’t be weird to see a Cinderace scoring a game-winning goal.

4Why Is Victini The First Unovan Pokémon?

Victini is a strange Pokémon. It’s aMythical Pokémonand essentially served the role as the deity of victory in the Pokémon universe. Its name is literally using the word victory, after all. Its rarity and incredible powers don’t just end there, though. It also is considered to be number 000 in the Unovan Pokédex.

This makes it listed before any of Unova’s starters, a first and last for the series. It’s a wonder why the researchers in Unova decided to register it as number zero, especially since as the victory Pokémon, it should really be number one.

3Would Arcanine Actually Make A Good Pet?

Arcanine is one of the most popular Gen 1 Pokémon. Its design is simple and elegant, as it is just a giant dog that spits fire. They spend their time in the anime most often as allies of the police force or as fiercely loyal partners. It could even be said that this would be one of the best Pokémon to have as a pet. But is that really true?

It’san effective user of Intimidationand is just massive. A little kid that didn’t know an Arcanine would probably be terrified of this giant dog with the ability to melt rocks. It might not be as a great of a pet as most people would think.

2Is Houndoom Really That Evil?

Following up the Arcanine question, what about Houndoom? Johto’s Dark-type dog is evil both in depiction and design, often being shown as a Pokémon used for evil deeds. Its design is also dark and gloomy, with spikes and a mean face. In terms of dogs, it doesn’t look like it would make a great pet.

However, its design doesn’t make it any less loyal. With the right trainer, it is shown to be as fiercely loyal and kind as Arcanine. Houndoom really is a good Pokémon at heart despite having toxic fumes in literally in its body.

1Why Is Charizard The Only Fire-Type That Matters To Game Freak?

Everyone has a favorite starter Pokémon, even Game Freak. Game Freak very clearly cares more about Charizard than literally every other Fire-type starter or starter in general. This Pokémon not only got two Mega Evolutions, but also its own spot inSuper Smash Bros. 4’s roster and a spot as the signature Pokémon of Galar’s champion, Leon.  This dragon even had a Gigantamax Form confirmed before Blastoise and Venasaur were given their green card.

Being one of the original 150 Pokémon, Charizard’s popularity is understood but also disappointing at times. There is such a thing as too much Charizard.
