Players around the world were shocked when Microsoft revealed that it would be acquiring Bethesda. As a massive game studio known for such franchises asThe Elder ScrollsandFallout, this sort of move could reshape the landscape of gaming. In response to this, many Sony fans were calling for PlayStation to make an acquisition of its own, and now fans have an answer to those requests.
There aren’t any acquisitions or mergers happening this hot minute, butPlayStationhead Jim Ryan did make the company’s stance on the matter clear. Sony fully intends to grow its brand further by acquiring more developers, but only where it makes sense to do so.

In other words, Sony doesn’t want to go acquiring publishers and developers for the sake of doing so, but rather take a more tactical approach. It’s unclear at this moment how this will manifest in the future, but fans can expect to seemore mergers and acquisitions in the coming years from Sony.
The most recent acquisition on Sony’s part was for Insomniac Games back in 2019, and since then the PS exclusiveSpider-Mangames have been a huge hit. After Microsoft’s major acquisition, fans were throwing ideas around of what company Sony should acquire in response, and this new information makes those predictions all the more possible. One of the major requests from fans would be forSony to acquire FromSoftware, best known for creating theDark Soulsfranchise, though there are a host of other potential developers that would fit well under the PlayStation umbrella as well.
It’s also possible that Sony plans to grow its first-party offerings by founding new studios entirely, though there isn’t much precedent for this yet. Either way, the situation is somewhat difficult for fans due to its implication on cross-play. Over the last few years,Microsoft and Sony have lowered their defensesand allowed for more cross-play between their consoles, but as each company establishes a library of first-party, exclusive games that could all change. Sony hasn’t made any comments about the Bethesda acquisition, but it more than likely has some kind of retaliation in store.
In the case of Microsoft, it seems as though the company is honoring the announced platforms for upcoming Bethesda games, meaning things likeThe Elder Scrolls 6could still release on PS5. On the other hand new Bethesda games and any games made by first party Sony studios most likely will be exclusive.
