Aside from both being incredibly iconic and one openly loving the other, there isn’t a lot thatPokemonand PewDiePie have in common. Despite this, fans think that they’ve found a reference to the content creator in a recent episode ofPokemon Journeys, as Ash appears to be wearing some PewDiePie merchandise. If this were in fact the case, it would haveinteresting implications for the canon of thePokemonuniverse, implying that PewDiePie is an actual character in it and potentially confirming the existence of things like YouTube and streaming. Naturally, this wasn’t actually a reference to PewDiePie, but the similarity is interesting nonetheless.
InPokemon, each of the gyms in a region tend to have a logo or symbol of some sort. Understandably, the logo for the fighting type gym is a fist, which just so happens to be very similar to the logo used by PewDiePie as a “Brofist.”

One Reddit user posted an image of Ash and Goh in front of a computer monitor in which Ash’s shirt had this logo on it, and immediatelyconnected it to the Brofist logo from PewDiePie. It didn’t take long forPokemonfans to come out and explain why this likely isn’t a direct reference, but PewDiePie and Pokemon fans alike are still having fun running with the comparison. There’s even a scene just before Ash is shown wearing this shirt in which a chair that looks very similar to PewDiePie’s gaming chair is shown.
Whether or not this is all just a coincidence orPokemon’s way of subtly showing support for the content creator remains to be seen. Even if it is the latter, it is unlikely that Nintendo will ever come out and make a statement about this. AlthoughPewDiePie has always been a vocal supporter ofPokemonas a whole, his content sometimes crosses the line of what Nintendo is likely willing to endorse given their family friendly nature.
It’s entirely possible that this was meant to be some kind of reference, but given the fact thatPokemonhas been around longer than PewDiePie has been making content and hasused this fighting type symbol before, it does seem unlikely. Regardless, fans are free to interpret and enjoy the show however they please, and neither PewDiePie nor Nintendo have come out and made any kind of statement about the potential reference. Players wanting to see the scene for themselves can find it inPokemon Journeysepisode 59.
