The part facing off against ifrit in the battle simulator

This is specifically about lore and details about the world and not about changes this game makes from the original. Most of the facts here apply to the original PS1 title as well.

7Summons

They All Have A Story In The World

Unlike the original 1997 PS1 game, summons are earned in the Combat Simulator. You strengthen each summon and weaken them in the fight against them by finding their summon crystals in the world.Every time Cloudhappens upon one, Chadley chimes in with a brief explination about the history of these godly creatures players eventually control.

Often times, they were gods or had other mythological functions. Most of the summons were gods worshipped by ancient people. It makes sense, considering that Materia is partly made by the collective memory of the Lifestream and everything that inhabited it.

6People From Wutai Moved To Midgar

And People From Midgar Moved To Wutai

The tensions between Wutai and Midgar are more heavily at the forefront of the story inRebirth. One particularly striking moment occurs when Yuffie sees that a dead Shinra employee has a Wutain name.

This sparks up the conversation between the party about how some people from Wutai eventually settled in Midgar. Adversely, some Shinra soldiers decided to move to Wutai, which is why some outsiders are in the ranks of the Wutai military and government, particularly Glenn Lodbrok.

5The Gold Saucer Is Only About Four Years Old

And Dio Was A Shinra Employee

Dio is as almost naked and flamboyant as ever inRebirth, though he does have a cape this time around. One would expect such a personality to have founded the ultimate amusement park known as the Gold Saucer. Intel data from the ground beneath the theme park reveals that the Gold Saurcerspawned from a museumcalled the Reliquary that Dio requested be built by Shinra.

The Gold Saucer was moved to Corel after the mako reactor there exploded as a way to bring economic growth to the area. However, the massive amount of powerused by the Gold Sauceris the reason why most of the land is desert.

Barret holding a lever in the Mythril Mines

Dio’s past as a Shinra employee explains why he is all too happy to help the party out when the company is hot on its tail.

4The Mythril Mines Are Abandoned

Mythril Is Obsolete, And The Museum Was Abandoned After The War

Players travel through the Mythril Mines after defeating the Midgarsormr (originally named the Midgar zolom). What was a quick trek through a cave in the original game is turned into a whole chapter forRebirth.

The game explains that Mythril is no longer sought after since Shinra was able to make far better gear and equipment. The place was turned into a museum by the Republic of Junon, but it was abandoned and fell into disrepair after the war between Shinra and Wutai.

Shinra Helicopter Flying To Junon

3Junon Was Founded By Sailors

Seafarers Who Made That Port Their Permanent Home

An intel report players find by analyzing one of the lifestream springs in the game details the origins of Junon. The city was originally founded by Sailors who grouped together to make the settlement using their various vessels. It was a smart way to verify everyone benefited from their trading.

However, like a lot of past relics of The Planet, Shinra and the rise of Mako technology led to the city’s ruin and economic downfall. Now, it belongs to Shinra, who built the fortress where the giant canon sits.

2Gongaga Saw Peace During The War

It Was Out Of The Way Of Disaster

Gongaga was a tiny part of the original game. In fact, players could skip it altogether. Almost an entire chapter takes place here inRebirthand the town is given more backstory. It was spared the violence of the war between Wutai and Shinra thanks to its location.

It also was not too heavily developed and transformed by the company because of the thick jungle. The only thing the company really did was build an airstrip, but it is in ruins by the time Cloud and the party use it during the course of the game.

1Why The Gi Are So Antagonistic

They Hate That They Can’t Return To The Lifestream

The Gi are no longer just some random enemy from the past that Cosmo Canyon had to deal with. They had a relationship with the Cetra and the two lived in relative peace. After the Cetra left Cosmo Canyon the Gi started to become more and more violent and scornful toward their inability to return to the lifestream since they came from another planet.

This is said to be the cause of their attacks on the people of Cosmo Canyon. Not only that, but their hatred was also what ultimately created the Black Materia. The original game gave no explination for the Black Materia’s origins.
