Although there’s still no official release date yet, many fans are excited aboutThe Outlast Trials, the third installment in the horrifying series from Red Barrels. The first entry, which came out in 2013, is considered by many to beone of the best psychological horror games of the last decade, up there with the likes ofSomaandLayers of Fear.Trialsappears to be going in a more multiplayer direction, but it still sounds like it will be a terrifying experience. In the run-up to its launch, the studio has been teasing aspects from the game.

In a recent video posted to theOutlastdeveloper’s YouTube channel, there was some discussion on the horror that awaits players in the upcoming release. In between footage from the game itself, film and game studies professor Bernard Perron talked about what it is about horror that draws so many players in despite it being “unpleasant,” adding that the genre incorporates elements of the future, such as the idea of something about to happen. Alongside this, psychiatrist Dr. Carl Chiniara talks about the nature of fear and how it helps people react to threats.

Of course, the gameplay itself stands out in between these serious discussions on horror. And on top of this, there’s also a full documentary about the making of the game coming some time this year. SomeOutlast Trialsbehind the scenes footagewas also uploaded last month, showing off the game’s motion capture elements. Exactly when this new “making of” documentary will emerge cannot be said at this stage, but hopefully there will be further announcements about it and the game itself soon.

While there is no launch date as of yet forThe Outlast Trials, it is expected that the game will also be out some time this year. It’sone of the most anticipated horror games of 2022, along withThe Callisto ProtocolandScorn. And even thoughTheOutlast Trialswill lean more towards multiplayer, perhaps taking cues from the likes ofPhasmophobiaorDead By Daylight, there will still be a solo campaign for those who prefer a single-player experience.

When the first entry dropped nine years ago, it went down as one of the most terrifying and disturbing games in the genre, also containingone of the scariest hospital levels in gaming. While the sequel, which released in 2017, upped the ante by several magnitudes, it wasn’t quite as well received as its predecessor. In any case, there are plenty of fans out there who are looking forward to where Red Barrels will be taking the series from here.

The Outlast Trialsis in development and is scheduled for release in 2022.
