A newHigurashimanga spin-off will premiere in the March issue of Futabasha’s Monthly Action, the magazine revealed on Tuesday. The upcomingHigurashi no Naku Koro ni Onimanga will debut on February 25 and will be featured on the March issue’s front page.

Theseries is setin the Taisho Era in 1923 and follows the exploits of Oryō Sonozaki. The series will be illustrated byShin Slayers: Falces no Sunadokeiartist, Asahi.

Ryukishi07’sHigurashi When They Crysound novels were released in Japan from 2002-2006, with a variety of compilation titles and game-exclusive arcs released following the conclusion of the original series. Variousmanga adaptations of the different story arcsin the game were released from 2005-2011 in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine and Square Enix’s Gangan Powered, Gangan Wing, GFantasy, Monthly Shōnen Gangan, and Monthly Gangan Joker.

A 26-episode anime adaptation from Studio Deen aired during the Spring and Summer 2006 seasons, followed by a second 24-epsiode series,When They Cry: Kai, which aired during the Summer and Fall 2007 seasons. Chiaki Kon (Nodame Cantabile,Golden Time)directed both seasons, with Toshifumi Kawase (Eyeshield 21,Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam) handling the series composition and Kenji Kawai (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Mob Psycho 100) contributing the score. The popularity of the anime inspired a variety of OVA series between 2007-2013.

A 24-episodeanime sequel seriesanimated by Passione,Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou, aired during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 seasons. It was followed by a 15-episode second season,Higurashi: When They Cry – Sotsu, which aired during the Summer 2021 season. Kawai returned to score both series, with Keiichiro Kawaguchi (SKET Dance,Hayate the Combat Butler) directing and Naoki Hisaya (Flip Flappers,Citrus) penning the script.

A manga-exclusiveanswer arc for theGouanime series,Higurashi: When They Cry – Meguri, launched on Kadokawa’s Young Ace Up in October 2021. The series is illustrated by Tomato Akase (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou).
