When theGod of Warreboot hit the shelves in 2018, it breathed a new kind of life into the series, with a more mature and deeply cinematic experience. Although many are perhapswaiting for the release ofRagnorak, the next installment in the franchise, the recent PC port of the most recent release has been impressing fans and critics alike, with it already shooting to the top of Steam’s bestseller list within days of launching. Now, it looks as though a couple of modders have been able to make it compatible on even more systems.
According to a report from DSO Gaming, it’s now possible for PC fans to playGod of Waron Windows 7, 8, and even 8.1, thanks to a new mod. In its officially current state, the PC version of the game can only be played on Windows 10 and 11, but thanks to users okt04175 and alan2350, it’s now feasible to get it running on older iterations of the ubiquitous operating system. It should be pointed out, however, that installing the mod will mean the game won’t be able to play on Windows 10 or 11 from that point on.

The mod involves applying a patch to the game’s .exe file, as well as downloading and decompressing a couple of .dll files, and maybe some other patches as well. A couple of screenshots on the Nexus Mods page shows theGod of Warmenu as well as a dialogue box showing the computer being used is indeed running on Windows 7. It might sound like a few things need to be downloaded and applied to the game’s files, but it does mean that those who don’t have newer versions of Windows will still get to play the reboot ofone of the PlayStation 2’s most beloved series.
Sometimes, it can be a bit concerning to install unofficial patches, especially for new games, on the off-chance that studios may bot be happy about it. However,God of War’s director has encouraged players to mod the game, with them saying that they even prefer playing PC games that have mods.
As for the game itself,God of Warhas been doing tremendously well on Steamalready, with a current all-time player peak of 73,529 at the time of writing. It shows that gamers are not just interested in console exclusive titles, and that PC ports of already lucrative releases can yield additional positive results, for both the fan base and the game’s creators.
God of Waris available now on PC and PS4.
