Just like the prequel trilogy before it, theStar Warssequel films seem to have earned equal parts respect, disdain, and indifference. But in the time since the still stinging conclusion, some fans have discovered that they actually kind of miss those new characters. Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, and the rest of the gang may have had a rather disjointed few stories dedicated to their character development, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t gained admirers.
So it may come as a pleasant surprise to find out that at least some of them may make agrand return toStar Warssooner than one might expect. At least, that’s how things appear to be going if the words of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy can be taken at face value. A recent interview focusing on more current events in a galaxy far, far away briefly touched on the subject of theStar Warssequel trilogy’s characters, and Kennedy decided to play things just a little coy.

“Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” Kennedy said to Empire when the subject of the sequel characters came up. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.” Considering the characteristicStar Warstrend of bringing back every conceivable character and reference whenever possible, this may not exactly be much of a surprise to some. But it’s certainly good to hear for those who enjoyedthe genius ofStar Wars: The Last Jediand the “definitely a movie”-ness of the other 2.
The sequels weren’t the only topic of conversation during Kennedy’s talk with Empire magazine, however. She also touched on some particularly hype-worthy news from the set ofStar Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s already common knowledge thatHayden Christensen would be reprising his roleas Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the limited series alongside Ewan McGregor as the titular Jedi hermit. But until now, there haven’t really been any stories about seeing the 2 of them together on set yet again. Kennedy got to see that reunion firsthand, which she can definitely add to the list of her job’s best perks.
“The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited,” Kennedy said of the presumably heartwarming experience. “They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realizing how importantStar Warswas to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers.” Some may still not feel like theStar Warsprequels happened all that long ago, but it’s been almost 20 years since Christensen and McGregor first performed together inStar Wars: Attack of the Clonesand longer still since the latter first played Kenobi inThe Phantom Menace.
That’s right, everybody is old now. The fans are old, the actors are old, the movies are old, and the jokes are old. For all those fellow millennials out there who (rightfully) refuse to believe time exists,Obi-Wan Kenobilooks like it will bring on some powerful nostalgia. For everyone else, the same is probably true. It’s not like millennials have a monopoly on remembering things, contrary to what countless think pieces might imply.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobiis currently set to air on Disney Plus in 2022.
