Attack on Titanis one of the most well-known and important anime franchises of the last decade. After more than ten years on air, the show finally concluded in November 2023, but its legacy will likely live on for years to come. WhenAttack on Titanstarted in 2013, it stood in stark contrast to a lot of the other anime at the time. The start of the 2010s marked the end of the moe boom, but a predominant aesthetic for the following years had yet to catch on.AoTwas dark and gritty, and it took the world by storm, amassing a huge fan base that would follow it through lengthy hiatuses and over a decade of new episodes.
With the success thatAttack on Titanfound, it is no surprise that the series has received spin-offs, films, and games. There have been plenty ofAoTgames ranging from mobile titles all the way to larger-scale adaptations designed for home consoles. One thing that they all share, however, is that they have not provided a definitive experience. The most well-knownAttack on Titangamesare Koei Tecmo’sAttack on TitanandAttack on Titan 2: Final Battle. The first game only covers the start of the series, and the second covers up until the end of the third season, omitting the conclusion of the story. This is a real shame, too, considering how well the developer’s games did at adapting the series.
Attack on Titan Has Good Gaming Adaptations
The original 2016Attack on Titangame by Koei Tecmo adapts the first season of the anime and the start of the second season. The story is simplified, but the game’s implementation ofODM Gearis great. Players can whip around in the air and cut down titans with their swords, just as characters do in the show. Ultimately, the game is rough around the edges, but it manages to capture the spirit of the series and the fantasy of expertly dashing through the air to kill giant enemies. The sequel builds on its foundations to provide an even better experience.
Attack on Titan 2with itsFinal BattleDLC is currently the closest thing there is to a definitiveAoTgame. The title places players in the shoes of an unnamed recruit and lets them watch the story play out from a new perspective. This switch to a unique user-created character is something of a mixed bag. Many of the relationship-building and RPG mechanics are unexciting and rob the game of the excellent pacing inWit Studio’s animeadaptation. It does allow for more freedom in missions, though, and for all of its shortcomings, the game more than makes up for it with its upgraded UI, combat, and movement.
There Has Never Been a Better Time For a New Attack on Titan Game
With the recent conclusion of theAttack on Titananime, there couldn’t be a more perfect time for another game adaptation.Koei Tecmoshould take advantage of the momentum it has established and create a final entry in its series ofAoTtitles.Attack on Titan 3could cover the complete events from the series and drop the lackluster framing of the second game to tell the story from the perspective of the show’s beloved cast.A final installment could easily become the definitiveAttack on Titangame and let the company create its most compelling, complete version of the story with the knowledge it gained from past entries.
An AoT Game Should Strike While the Iron is Hot
Attack on Titanconcluded in November of last year, as the manga it was based on did years before.AoTwill likely be remembered well and hold on to some of its popularity, but as is the case with all things, as its time in the spotlight grows more distant, so will fans' investment. If there is going to be anotherAttack on Titangame, it would be wise for it to come sooner than later while the series is still fresh in the hearts and minds of fans. As one of thebest shonen animeof all time,Attack on Titandeserves a game that tells its full story, and there is no better time for it than now.
