Changes Made to Call of Duty: Warzone 2’s Gulag System
The Gulag system is one of its most defining aspects of theWarzonefranchise, setting the game apart from many other battle royale titles likeFortniteandApex Legendsby giving eliminated players a chance to respawn by fighting to the death in a small-scale environment. Despite the success of the Gulag in the firstWarzone, the system has been given a big overhaul in the recent sequel.
The most substantial change is thatWarzone 2’sGulag is now a 2v2 experienceas opposed to the classic 1v1 formula, with players now having to rely on the work of a random teammate even if they’re on solo playlists. This has proven to be controversial considering it may take a player’s fate out of their own hands, with fans already lambasting idle teammates who have doomed them to a loss.

Warzone 2’sGulag also has an AI boss called the Jailerthat can be killed if both opposing teams work together to fully deplete its health, granting victory to both sides. While these aspects work well with other new features like proximity chat, many fans are not happy with how the Gulag can now be perceived as gimmicky and random. There’s clearly room for further changes and improvement for this particular Gulag system.
How Warzone 2’s Gulag Could Be Improved
While the concept of 2v2 combat seems to be a mainstay ofWarzone 2’sGulag, the game could offer the possibility of fights being split into simultaneous 1v1 experiences. Variation is key to the replayability ofWarzone 2, withendgame circles being able to split and branch offas just one example of how developers are iterating the random elements in its battle royale gameplay.
IfWarzone 2’sGulag had the chance to split its combat into simultaneous 1v1 arenas, fans would be treated to more classic gameplay without entirely taking away from the identity of the newer Gulag. If both members of the same team win their respective 1v1s, they could both be grantedredeployment to Al Mazrah, whereas two victors would have to engage in another 1v1 should they come from opposing teams.
To reward players in this situation, the sole winning player could thenspawn back intoCall of Duty: Warzone 2with their full loadout, negating the Gulag’s hindrance of respawning with only a pistol. These hypothetical changes could be a small sliver of the breadth of improvements Activision has at its disposal to better the Gulag experience. Due to the criticism that this aspect of gameplay is already facing, it is likely that some changes toWarzone 2’sGulag may occur in the near future as updates for the game roll out.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
