For a few decades, it seemed like the movie part of media entertainment was the one thing that wasn’t going to work for theDungeons & Dragonsfranchise. However, the recent release ofHonor Among Thieves,a film that features the adventures of a party that includes a Bard, a Barbarian, and a Druid, might change that trend.

Viewers who know something about theForgotten Realmswill recognize some of the locations where the movie characters find themselves. This ranges from whole regions and countries to smaller places like towns and castles. The actual filming locations of the movie included Iceland, Ireland, and in front of a lot of green screens, but here are the fictional locations according to how they appear in the lore of Faerûn.

7Icewind Dale

Part of the northernmost reaches of The Forgotten Realms, Icewind Dale isone ofD&D’s more popular locations. It’s the setting for modules that include Rime of the Frostmaiden, one of the first adventures about the far north that included the long nights and survivalism along with the usual dungeon-delving and questing.

It also looks great on film, which is another reason why it made an appearance inHonor Among Thieves. Icewind Dale is one part of a much larger region called Frozenfar, and this is where we can find another important but smallerD&Dlocation.

6Revel’s End

The prison that would house Faerûn’s most deadly criminals would have to be in the isolated and frozen north, and this is where Holga and Edgin are sent after a botched robbery on a Harper stronghold. Revel’s End is built on a cliff side overlooking the Sea of Moving Ice in the northernmost part of Frozenfar.

Revel’s End was well-guarded in addition to being a tower constructed on the side of a sheer mountainous drop. Edgin and Holga hatched a plan to escape during their parole hearing, which turned out to be needless since they had been pardoned anyway.

5Neverwinter

A bustling metropolis in what was otherwise a cold and inhospitable land, Neverwinter was a city-state in northern Faerûn. It was also knownas the Jewel of the North, and when Holga and Edgin escape from prison, they travel there to find that a former party member has ascended to its highest office.

The city was a unique presence in the northern wastes, boasting a population of skilled gardeners and engineers that kept the tables full of fresh produce and the short days filled with light. It’s a popular location that’s also used as a setting for novels, adventuring modules, and board games.

4Castle Never

It’s also known as the Keep of Lord Never, and this is where Forge Fitzwilliam makes his home as the lord of Neverwinter. The tall, shining towers that viewers will recognize in panoramic views of the city are part of the castle, and it’s built as much for defense as for aesthetics.

There’s another location within the castle that makes a notable appearance, and nobody is surprised that this would be the Vault. After the failed robbery, it seems that the Tablet of Resurrection was locked up here for safekeeping. However, it’s being guarded by the notorious Wizard Mordenkainen, rolled and played by none other than Gary Gygax. They need a special item called the Helm of Disjunction to reach the tablet and there’s only one placethey can go to find out where it is.

3Evermoors Cemetery

Fortunately, some of the people that might know where to find the Helm are also Holga’s ancestors, members of the Uthgardt Elk tribe. However, they’re long dead and buried in a graveyard specifically for those that fell in the Battle of the Evermoors. Good thingthe party has a Deathly Tokenthat can be used to speak to dead people.

Most viewers have seen the trailer that features the old joke about asking the corpse five questions, and this takes place among the sacred ground of the Evermoors. Eventually, our heroes find the information they seek, and their adventure moves on to the next location, a halfling city called Longsaddle. After stopping there, it’son to another more dangerous place.

2The Underdark

The vast and terrifying Underdark is beneath the vast prehistoric world of Abeir-Toril. Just like in the TTRPG, it’s filled with demons, monsters, ancient primordial beings, and Drow Elves.

For adventurers, however, it is worth the dangerous trip to find valuable artifacts, and that’s also why the characters ofHonor Among Thievesvisit the Underdark. According to the denizens of Evermoors, this is where the Helm can be found, hidden in the ruins of a Halfling city.

1The Ruins Of Dolblunde

Dolblunde is one ofD&Dlore’s more fascinating places, and depending on the game players can experience the city either as a ruin or a thriving halfling city, as it was in its heyday. Located under the city of Waterdeep in a region known as the Upper Northdark, the Paladin Xenk leads the party to this location where he hid the Helm of Disjunction.

What follows is an action sequence that includes discovering Holga’s walking stick is a special item called a Hither-Thither Staff, the appearance of some Thayan assassins, and a visit from the red dragon Themberchaud, who lives in a completely different region of the Underdark but shows up here for the fanservice.
