SteelRisingis set in 1789, in an alternate history during the French Revolution, where King Louis XVI has razed the city of Paris with an automata army. Players will take on the role of Aegis, a female automaton bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette tasked with putting an end to the massacre. The trailer opens up with a shot of the French capital in flaming ruins, decimated by the king’s robot army. Viewers will hear several disembodied voices, with the feminine voice believed to be Aegis herself. The depiction of Paris is grim and dark, but hope is not entirely lost, as Aegis begins to take on an defeat King Louis' automatons during the last few seconds of the trailer.

The game appears to have a distinctly steampunk vibe, a departure from Spiders' last title,GreedFall, although the two share the premise of an alternate history. Despite the gameplay trailer releasing today, fans are already making comparisons to franchises that haven’t seen new entries in quite some time. Many gamers felt thatGreedFallacted as an honoraryDragon Age, and thatSteelRisingcould potentially be a stand-in forAnthem 2.0. Spiders has proven its capability of emulating aspects from BioWare titles, andSteelRising’s robot RPG action may end up being another such example.

WhileSteelRising’s premise looks fairly unique, it isn’t the only new thing announced this week set in an alternate version of the French Revolution. Netflix has announcedCastlevaniacharacter Richter Belmont will be starring in aCastlevaniaseries spinoff. The great-great-great-grandson  of the first series' protagonists Trevor and Sypha, Richter is also featured as a fighter inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. Although neither the spinoff norSteelRisinghave set release dates, fans can likely expect to hear more in the coming months.

The first gameplay trailer forSteelRisingis fans' best look yet at what the actual game will look like. The game will be featured atnext month’s Nacon Connect Event, which should hopefully provide even more insight as to what players can expect.

SteelRisingis currently in development.
