The PlayStation 5 launches in just under three weeks. And while the new Sony console has an exciting launch line-up of new games, many prospective buyers are interested to see what their current PS4 game library looks like running on aPS5. That’s why a leak claiming that games includingGod of WarandFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewill receive some sort of extra PS5 support is being received with excitement. The limited information available makes it difficult to make any assumptions, however.
The leak comes via a now-deleted tweet from Lance McDonald, a well-known dataminer. In the deleted tweet, McDonald says thatGod of WarandFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, as well asGod of War 3 Remastered, were updated with “some amount of added PS5 support.” McDonald goes on to clarify that it’s impossible to tell what kind of support these games have received until the PS5 is available. As such, PlayStation fans are speculating quite a bit.

The implication is that these three games are receiving support for PS5 beyond standard backward compatibility. That isn’t verified, of course, but it seems to be the insinuation. The most likely scenario being that they’ll receive basic performance improvements utilizing thePS5’s more powerful hardware. But there is some speculation that these games could receive more meaningful optimizations and improvements, requiring a larger effort by their developers.
Sony’s confirmed that99% of PS4 games will run on PS5. These games will largely work without needing a patch or update. But many PS4 games will have upgrades for the PS5 that increase their frame rates, shorten their loading times, or offer other improvements, too. Games likeDestiny 2,Doom Eternal,Marvel’s Avengers, and evenThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntwill be improved.God of War,God of War 3 Remastered, andFinal Fantasy 7 Remakemay soon be officially added to that list.
These three games make a lot of sense to receive more substantial updates for the PS5. BothGod of WarandFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeare expected to receive sequels during the PS5 generation. As such, it makes sense to update bothGod of WarPS4 releases, as well as the relatively recent release ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake.God of War: Ragnarok’s release may come as soon as 2001, and though the nextFinal Fantasy 7 Remakechapter is likely a ways off, fans are likely going to want to experience it again.
It’s worth repeating that the details of this report are both unreliable and unconfirmed. McDonald has even deleted the tweet, which is notable but not necessarily disqualifying. Suffice to say, more information is needed. An official announcement from Sony and Square Enix is necessary to say anything for certain. And with less than 3 weeks until thePS5 launches, that means fans should hear more soon.
