With the release ofGhosts ‘n Goblins Resurrectionmere hours away, information relating to the game and its features continue to surface courtesy of the developers. The first game in theGhosts ‘n Goblinsseries in over a decade,Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrectionpromises to retain the challenge of the original games while introducing modern elements to keep the game’s experience fresh.

One of the features introduced inGhosts ‘n Goblins Resurrectionis the decision towards a storybook-esque visual aesthetic. There are several difficulties to choose from as well as various weapons and abilities that Arthur can utilize throughout his adventure. Earlier this month,Capcom hinted at a potential co-op modeto be included inResurrection, yet information was scarce at the time.

In today’s developer video, Capcom released more information surrounding the co-op mode, introducing a mechanic known as support characters. WhileResurrectionis primarily a solo player experience, players are given the option to join in via couch co-op by controlling one of the “Three Wise Men.” The first support character, Barry, can cast a barrier around himself and Arthur, shielding him from harm. Kerry, the second support, can carry Arthur from hazardous locations into safety, helping Arthur overcome challenging platform sections. Lastly, Archie can create bridge arches, providing platforms for Arthur to traverse across, helping him access hard-to-reach areas.

Aside from their names, which directly relate to their powers, such as Barry with barrier and Kerry with carry, the introduction of these characters can help or hinder Arthur’sadventure inGhosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. As these three characters are controlled by a second player, the second player can decide to aide the primary player or deliberately place Arthur in harm’s way if they so choose. The freedom for the second player to become the villain in co-op is something that the developers’ reference, offering a bigger challenge than what’s already presented in-game.

Another addition toResurrectionis the inclusion of the Magic Metronome item. This item, which must be unlocked, has the ability to change the speed of the gameplay, making the game either slower or faster. The item can be used to make difficult parts easier as the player wishes to commit to precise platforming. On the other hand, increasing the speed would also increase the challenge for the player, if they so choose.

The freedom to choose how the players wish to playGhosts ‘n Goblins Resurrectionis a great inclusion for a modernization of a game series that’s over 30 years old. Players wishing to experience the classic frustrating difficulty of the originalGhosts ‘n Goblinscan make the game as difficult as they wish. Players can also customize their own experience as they see fit, something that has been seen in other titles such asBloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
