There is a dual narrative perspective between a writer, Alan Wake, and an FBI Agent, Saga Anderson. It’s a detective story at its core too through alternate realities that shift perspectives on a dime.Alan Wake 2is a trippy game to be sure, and these eight games are sure to scratch similar itches.

Controlfeels like the obvious pick because it is the direct predecessor toAlan Wake 2. Players don’t need togo throughControlto understand the events ofAlan Wake 2, but it does help. For example, the agency that Agent Estevez belongs to is the same organization that gets overthrown inControlaka the Federal Bureau of Control. It’s more of a straight action game although there are horror elements to it. It was rough when it launched in 2019 but patches over the years have helped stabilize the experience.

Cult of the Lambis perfect for players who loved the cult aspects ofAlan Wake 2. Players begin as a lamb about to get slaughtered for a cult’s gods when another god prevents the ritual from going down. This lamb then creates its own cult with the blessing of this new god. It’s sort of likeAnimal Crossingif it were an action roguelike. Dive into dungeons, get followers, and then build up your paradise. The cuteness is a fun juxtaposition to all of the horrific acts that players will do to their worshippers.

Deadly Premonitionis not exactly what one would call a universal hit. The game was reviewed poorly but has gathered a niche audience because of the story and characters. While the mechanics are cumbersome at best, the earnestness of the characters helps make the game a charming experience.

LikeAlan Wake 2, it’s clear thatDeadly Premonitionwas inspired byTwin Peaks. Deadly Premonition probably does the weird FBI thing better via Agent Francis York Morgan. It’s one of those"so bad it’s good" types of games.

The remake ofDead Spacekicked off 2023 with a bang. It was a long time coming as fans of the series hadn’t received a new game since the third mainline entry in 2013. The remake is a faithful conversion, keeping all of the horror elementswhilst making the gameplay tight. The changes that were made make a lot of sense such as the main character, Isaac Clarke, being able to speak. It’s also one of those horror games that fans will want to replay immediately with their powered-up version of Isaac in the New Game Plus mode.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2may seem like an odd choice to highlight forAlan Wake 2fans but there is a good reason. The story of this one follows bothPeter Parker and Miles Morales. Players can swap between them while exploring the city, but certain missions require a specific hero. It’s just like the swapping between Alan and Saga inAlan Wake 2. There are also some horror elements inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2but saying anything more would be a spoiler.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Codeis thelatest game from the minds behind the equally bizarreDanganronpaseries. Master Detective Yuma wakes up on a train with amnesia. He soon finds himself entangled in a murder mystery and the strangest part is that he gets a ghost partner to figure out what is going on.

This ghost, Shinigami, can take Yuma to a mind palace that helps him solve murders. It’s kind of like Saga’s Mind Place inAlan Wake 2but a lot more trippy like an anime version of the movieInception.

The remake ofResident Evil 4is equally faithful just likeDead Space. The original is well-regarded as the best in the series, and it’s easy to see why in this remake. It’s a long one too, byResident Evilstandards, and it will also probablyhave players coming backfor even more thanks to New Game+. The only thing missing is the suitcase puzzle-like element but only a small group of fabs are lamenting that one. It’s a great year for horror and this remake is a good accompaniment toAlan Wake 2for those looking for more action.

Super Mario Bros. Wonderis probably another game alongsideMarvel’s Spider-Man 2that will have fans scratching their heads. This is worth recommending though because, likeAlan Wake 2, it is a trip and a half. The big gimmick around this latest 2D adventure starring Mario and his friends is Wonder Flowers. Touching them will turn things wild inSuper Mario Bros. Wonderfrom Piranha Plants singing Piranha Plants, wonder seeds, to characters turning into blobs of goo. There’s a lot of imagination in this one, and it’s also worth checking out as a pallet cleanser toAlan Wake 2’sgrim dark narrative.
