Summary
Fablemight not be the first franchise that comes to mind when one thinks of crossovers in games. In the modern landscape where crossovers have become so commonplace, games likeFortnite,Call of Duty Warzone,Mortal Kombat, and previouslySuper Smash Bros. Ultimateare typically talked about. However,Fableactually has a brief history of experimenting with crossover in its games. With Playground Games' newFableon the horizon, it opens up the possibility of the franchise continuing this experimentation. Though it could potentially have some merits, crossovers inFablemust tread carefully to avoid losing itself.
There was a moment in time when crossovers inFablewere a highly sought-after, exclusive commodity. When theFable 2Limited Collector’s Edition was released, it included unique weapons and armor that could only be found in that edition. These items were the most notablecrossovers inFable’s history. They included Hal’s Armor, which was a veryFableversion of Master Chief’s armor fromHalo, Hal’s Sword, a fantasy version of an elite plasma sword, and Hal’s Rifle, which is based on theHaloassault rifle. If the newFablewas to take notes from the series' past, it could potentially provide some interesting crossovers.

How Crossovers Can Work In Fable
Fable Crossovers With Xbox Games
The newFablewill have to be smart with its choice of collaborations to avoid losing the unique look, feel, and tone of theFableworld. InFable 2,this was handled very well by adapting the art style of theHaloitems to fit intoFable’s aesthetic. This could certainly continue in the future with moreHalocrossovers. AsHaloand the Master Chief are the enduring poster child of Xbox, it makes sense they would be the first choice to return to the newFable. Even the same or a similar version of Hal’s armor fromFable 2would be cool to see.
SinceFable 2, Xbox has grown exponentially to include some of the most iconic game franchises in history. With so many characters and content under one roof, there is a seemingly endless source of crossover potential. Some interestingXbox franchise crossoverscould be:
Items such as character outfits, weapons, and exclusive items taken from these and other franchises could be a cool way to promote other games while providing some fun content for fans.
Crossovers With Past Fable Games
The newFablewill have to be mindful not to oversaturate the world with items and imagery from other games, as this could potentially take away from the richness oftheFableuniverse. A good way to include fun unlockables or exclusive gear that has a bit of nostalgia behind it would be to include armor/weapons from previousFablegames. This could also be a unique opportunity to reference fan-favorite characters who may not have the chance to fully return to a game. Some good characters to pull from would be:
Including references to older characters could also help make the newFableworld feel familiar to players, as it may be very different from the Albion of past games. Though there is still not much information aboutthe world ofFable 4, it could potentially be set in a different continuity from previous games, which could make references to older characters feel a bit mysterious and add a layer of intrigue to the game. Whatever route the newFabletakes, it will be interesting to see if and how crossovers are used to add to the experience.
