Though FromSoftware’sElden Ringis technically a new IP, it fits right in with the other ultra-difficult RPGs in the legendary Soulsborne lineup. In 2009,Demon’s Soulsset a precedent for meticulous melee combat, in-depth character customization, and intense PvP engagements. Released 13 years later,Elden Ringshares a lot of that game’s DNA, and, as was the case in the PlayStation 3 exclusive that started it all, players are usingincreasingly creative means to troll each other in online battles.
In a video titled “How To Be A Ledge Lord,” Reddit user u/DrakoGaming showcases a series of delightfully devilish PvP kills that likely left those on the receiving end of the player’s wrath utterly furious.Elden Ringfeatures dozens upon dozens of unique weapons and incantations, and u/DrakoGaming seems to be using the most unconventional armaments to dispatch their opponents. From sniping someone with the Jar Canon to flicking a foe from a rafter with the Ringed Finger, there’s never been a more stunning display of disrespect.

The highlight of the video, however, comes at the end when the player, acting as an invader, disguises themselves as a pot via the Mimic’s Veil item and quickly casts Rejection as their target saunters by, hurling them into a pit. There was, at some point, anestablished etiquette among From Software PvP enthusiasts, a time in which foes would bow before engaging in combat and fight on equal footing. As demonstrated by these clips, however, it’s no holds barred inElden Ring.
Yet, oddities such as these are becoming more and more commonplace in the community. Perhaps in response to the standard Rivers of Blood meta, some have taken it upon themselves to break the mold as thoroughly as possible. Be it engaging in drawn-out fistfights orimpersonatingElden RingNPCs to avoid invaders, things seem to keep getting stranger in the world of online dueling as time goes on.
While searching for ways to exploit the system is what makesElden Ring’s PvP so much fun for some, some players might prefer a return to the relative normalcy seen in prior FromSoftware games. It’s hard to say for sure, but something catering to these players’ wishes may be coming in a yet-to-be-announced DLC. Many fans have discussed the apparently useless colisseums located in Limgrave, Caelid, and Lyndell, and some theorize that they could be re-purposed asdedicated PvP arenas in a future update. Until then, however, players with a penchant for PvP will have to develop a keen eye for trickery.
Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
