Following up after theAir and Sand Updatefrom last November, Line in the Sand isDune: Spice Wars' first major update of 2023. One of the main additions in this update is an end-game statistics feature, a popular feature in many RTS games that allows players to gain some insight into their performance over the course of the game compared to their competitors. Map generation and starting spawns have seen some improvements as well, which should make game starts more balanced. A Landsraad bar has also been added so that players can keep track of the game’s complex political system more easily.
As expected, the update brings numerousimprovements toDune: Spice Wars' economy, hegemony, and military systems, along with some interesting new gear like dual guns for free company units, bazookas for wreckers, and mounted explosives for stealth probes that make them explode on death. A number of changes have been made to spy gameplay, including a new Defense Sabotage operation and a few adjustments to existing operations. AI has seen a few improvements as well, with a reworked military decisions engine and unit micro-management that should make combat against AI a bit more engaging.
Line in the Sand has also brought some major performance and optimization improvements and plenty of UI changes. Meanwhile, there have also been some quality-of-life improvements like much-needed AoE previews and helpful tweaks like making deployable units undeploy to move when ordered to attack outside of their range. AsDune: Spice Warswill be released out of early access this year, it looks like the game’s updates are focusing on bringing in those last bits of polish before the full release.
