A new video forDestiny 2: Lightfalldiscusses the main villains of the expansion, and of theDestinyuniverse as a whole. In many ways,Destiny 2has been building up to this moment. Dominus Ghaul, Oryx, Eramis, and Savathun were all stepping stones to the return of the Darkness. But withLightfallapproaching,Destiny 2players have a new name to give to their enemy. And that enemy did not come alone.

WhileThe Witch Queenexpansion was heavily focused on the Hive god Savathun, its post-season shifted direction in dramatic fashion. Season of the Hauntedreintroduced Emperor Calus' Leviathan ship, corrupted by darkness. Season of Plunder brought back Eramis, plotting a new effort to destroy the Traveler. Finally, Season of the Seraph is ongoing and serves as a prelude toLightfall, the coming of the Black Fleet, and the arrival of The Witness.

The latest video from Bungie discusses the threats facing Earth and the Guardians withLightfalljust days away from launch. It provides a brief background on the status quo, mentioning that the true threat to Earth isn’t actually Darkness itself. It’s a figure named The Witness, which wields Darkness in its hunt for the Traveler. Bungie even goes so far as saying The Witness is the “most powerful enemy in theDestinyuniverse,” and its coming could be seen as the start of a second Collapse.

But while The Witness may be the greatest threat to the universe,Destiny 2’sLightfallexpansion isn’t setting up the Darkness-wielder as players' focus. Instead, that role is being given to Calus. The deposed former emperor of the Cabal Empire has given himself to Darkness and hasbecome The Witness' servant. Where The Witness' motivations may be unclear, Calus' base greed is much more transparent. He wants riches, endless life, and everything else, as well.

Calus' efforts inLightfallwon’t be done in a vacuum, though. What he’s doing is at the order of the Witness, and through that players will be shown more of the truth of the situation than may otherwise have been revealed since the originalDestinylaunched in 2014. This is the beginning of the culmination of everythingDestinyplayers have invested their time into.

What truly awaits Guardians inDestiny 2: Lightfalland the year of seasonal content to follow is a mystery. But what is clear is thatLightfallisn’tDestiny 2’s final expansion.Destiny 2’s eighth and final, at least based on what’s currently known, expansion is tentatively planned for 2024.It’s namedThe Final Shape, and odds are the final confrontation with The Witness will have to wait until then.

Destiny 2: Lightfallreleases February 28 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
