The death of Cayde-6 hit theDestiny 2community hard and has left a hole among the game’s cast which is still vacant, but this looks to change when the Hunter Vanguard makes his grand return in the game’s next expansion,The Final Shape. The game’s next expansion will mark the end ofThe Light and Darkness Saga, with Guardians and The Witness facing off in one final battle to determine the fate of the universe. It appears Cayde-6 will be returning, though not as a Guardian, to help his former comrades-in-arms in this climactic battle a decade in the making.
Destiny 2is currently in Season of the Deep, the second season of content following the release ofLightfallin February 2023. The season sees the return of Titan and Deputy Commander Sloane, both of which have been missing since the end of Season of Arrivals and the launch ofBeyond Light. Sloane is calling Guardians to Titan to help protect a creature residing deep beneath the waves of the moon’s methane oceans which may be able to help in the coming battle against The Witness.

Cayde-6’s pending return was revealed as part of Bungie’s contribution to the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase. He appeared sitting across from his longtime friend and Vanguard member, Ikora Rey, who recounts the major events to have occurred since Cayde’s death at Uldren Sov’s hands in 2018’sForsakenexpansion. The Hunter Vanguard’s return also marks the return of Nathan Fillion, Cayde’s original voice actor, to the series after Nolan North stepped in to voice the character insideForsaken.
Along with Cayde’s return, the teaser gave a first glimpse at the lush landscape hidden behind the portalThe Witnessopened on the Traveler and disappeared into at the end ofLightfall’s campaign. It is not clear whether this is a world created by The Witness or another dimension, entirely, where the being of Darkness is trying to spread its influence and bring an end to its eons-old conflict with The Traveler. Whatever the world may be, players will be able to learn more about whatThe Final Shapehas in store with Bungie’s nextDestiny 2Showcase, set to take place on Jun 14, 2025.
It would not be surprising to see theDestiny 2community largely celebrate the return of Cayde-6 and, in turn, Nathan Fillion as both were extremely popular among the game’s playerbase. The return may be bittersweet for others, though, due to thepassing of Commander Zavala’s voice actor Lance Reddickin March 2023, which hitDestiny 2players hard due to the actor’s own popularity and mutual love for the community.
Destiny 2is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
