Both Sony and Microsoft have been acquiring studios in an effort to bolster their respective brands and secure more exclusives for their platforms. Microsoft has certainly been more aggressive on this front, whereas Sony has been acquiring studios that it has already had longstanding relationships with and who have been primarily making PlayStation exclusives anyway. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise whenPlayStation Japan seemingly leaked the acquisitionofBluepoint Games, the studio behind critically-acclaimed remakes likeShadow of the Colossusand PS5 launch titleDemon’s Souls. However, it seems that “leak” was inaccurate.
Since the PlayStation Japan mix-up,Bluepoint Gameshas reiterated that it is a “fully independent self-funded studio,” as explained in its Twitter bio and job listings on its website. The timing suggests that Bluepoint added this statement in response to the acquisition rumors, though that could be a coincidence. In any case, it seems that the rumored acquisition isn’t actually happening, at least, not yet.

What’s odd is that PlayStation Japan already had a graphic made up for the Bluepoint Games acquisition, suggesting that it’s in the works and the announcement happened prematurely, or maybe that talks fell through. It would make sense for Sony to try to get Bluepoint Games on lock, especially after the studio did such a great job with theDemon’s Soulsremake, but maybe Bluepoint passed for some reason. It’s also possible that negotiations are ongoing; really, no one can know for sure unless someone from Bluepoint or Sony offers up more information.
While Sony has apparently not acquired Bluepoint Games just yet, the company has been acquiring other studios to give an edge to the PlayStation brand. This includes Insomniac Games, the studio behind theRatchet & ClankandMarvel’s Spider-Mangames, and more recently, Housemarque. Housemarque has been making PlayStation exclusive games for years, with its recentPS5 exclusiveReturnalbeing a hit with critics, and so it’s not a surprise Sony decided to acquire that studio as well.
Like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games has primarily worked onPlayStation exclusives. In fact, nearly all of the games it’s developed have released exclusively on PlayStation platforms, withMetal Gear Solid HD Collectionand the Xbox 360 port ofTitanfallbeing the only exceptions. So even if Sony does not acquire Bluepoint Games, it’s still highly likely that the studio will continue to make PlayStation-exclusive titles.
The current rumor is thatBluepoint Games is making aMetal Gear Solidremake, but nothing has actually been announced at the time of this writing. Fans should take any information on Bluepoint Games' next project with a grain of salt until the company itself reveals it to the world.
