A speedrunner has not only set a new world record for beating the remake ofDead Spacein the fastest time, but is also the first person to do so in less than two hours. The speedrunning community provides gamers with an opportunity to set themselves insane challenges based on rapidness. There are even valuable chances to give back to society with events such asAwesome Games Done Quick raising millions for charity, all in the name of finishing video games as quickly as possible.

With theDead Spaceremake being released to high praise, Motive Studio has evidently done Visceral Game’s original 2008 survival horror title great justice. This reimagining of the game was more than just a way of reviving a classic and making it suitable for modern audiences. It also improved on the original formula with better graphics, quality-of-life changes, and new content. Given the remake’s current popularity, it’s not surprising that fans are trying to smash world records.

Speedrunner and horror game enthusiast sharkhat87 managed to complete theDead Spaceremake in a time of 1:55:30, or 1:56:12 when counting loading times. According to Speedrun.net, this beats second place, which is currently at 2:22:45, by nearly 30 minutes, an enormous gap in speedrunning terms. This is in the “Any%” category, which means the goal of the run is to simply get to the end of the game as fast as possible without worrying about gaining all items, side quests, or secrets. To be able to beat the game in less than two hours is pretty astonishing, especially considering second place managed it in just under three. Sharkhat87 has already made several attempts recently, so it will be interesting to see whether they can shave even more time off or if someone else will knock them off the podium.

For those who are interested, there are plenty ofgames suitable for speedrunning, including some which feel like they could have been made exactly for it, such asMirror’s EdgeandSuperhot. Anyone who’s tried it or even just watched others will know just how much time and dedication speedrunning takes, but this recentDead Spacevideo shows that it is possible to set new world records.

The remake of Visceral’s beloved game was one of themost anticipated horror titles of 2023. The genre itself is in good hands, it seems, especially with the remakes ofResident Evil 4andSilent Hill 2on the horizon, and it will be interesting to see how quickly the speedrunning community will begin challenging itself on these upcoming releases.
