DC’s Legends of Tomorrowsurprised everyone after its rather lackluster 1st season, going on to become an over-the-top favorite on The CW that some consider a guilty pleasure while others have become far less guilty about it. One reason for its wacky charm comes from Dominic Purcell as the hot-headed Mick Rory, whose pyromaniac tendencies and equally blazing personality save the team from trouble just as often as he gets them into it. But now, while announcing that his contract is due to expire soon, the actor seemed to channel his character with a bit more intensity than he may have intended.
The Australian actor took to Instagram on the morning of April 18th to write out a rather venomous declaration that he would be leavingLegends of Tomorrow. Apparently not content to simply announce it, he punctuated the statement with what appeared to be thinly-veiled jabs at the studio, suggesting that it “does not care” and used a few choice expletives that may or may not have been aimed at the people in charge. Needless to say, people were about as concerned aswhen a Twitch streamer suddenly acts strangely.

But later in the day, Purcell’s temper apparently calmed down a bit and he deleted the post, replacing it with a slightly more cordial (for him, anyway) tone and clarifying his fiery statement. “God would everyone chill the f*** out,” he wrote in his clearing of the air. “Why are people losing their mind because I’m leaving the show. Yes my tone was heavy straight to the point…It’s who I am. Do I have a beef with the studio at @warnerbrostv NO!” He went on to explain that he got a bit frustrated and annoyed about his contract expiring, saying “Who doesn’t and who hasn’t lashed out. Im f***in human. So for god sake chill on.”
It’s worth noting that Purcell specified he is only leaving the show on a full-time basis, and claimed he will return periodically even following his contract expiration, similarly to guest roles fromcharacters like John Diggle. So fans can at least rest easy knowing that they haven’t seen the last of this particular firebrand. The upcoming 7th season might not feature him as prominently as previous years, but he reassured fans that he hasn’t quit on a contract before and doesn’t intend to now. Said contract was set to expire at the end of season 7, so at the very least, Purcell promised to ride it out.
It’s almost uncanny how Purcell’s various statements sound remarkably like something his character Mick Rory would say, at least if The CW were a decidedly less family-friendly network. Perhaps that’s one of the big reasons he was cast in thenow dubiously-named “Arrowverse"years ago. The swiftness with which he amended his first statement also suggest that the studio might have quickly intervened and demanded a retraction, which would make sense if they’re used to dealing with him after all this time.
Still, there’s a reason Purcell is a fan favorite onLegends of Tomorrow. His often hilarious intensity keeps the views coming in along with the rest of the show’s zany antics. So if he’s leaving the series, it might spell the beginning of the end, even after years of other actors coming in and out of the cast. But no need to think about that right now. Knowing season 7 is still incoming is sure to keep enthusiasm up.
