Fortnite’sSeason 2 chapter 2 has been out since February 20th, and many have realized a clear theme for the season: it is all centered around villainous factions and spies. A newJames Bondfilm is coming out soon, so there may be some kind of officialFortnitecross over event at some point, but nothing official has been revealed.
For now, players have been enjoying the spy themeFortnitehas cultivated and making some difficult choices. Within this season, players are given the opportunity to choose between two new skin variants:Shadow or Ghost.

The Ghost faction is dressed mainly in white while the Shadow faction is dressed mainly in black. The six agents are more vibrant in the Ghost faction and their skins include more colors than the Shadow ones. On the other hand, the Shadow faction dresses these agents in darker more ominous colors, which is appealing to a lot of players. Each skin is characterized by a spy theme, so the shadow skins come across more threatening and traditionally villainous while the Ghost skins have a more flashy, “look at me” theme. With these two variant options, players are having to make a difficult choice betweenShadow and Ghost, and it is changinghow the game looks.

Ghost Faction Skins
These skins look a bit more vibrant than the Shadow variant skins. They are characterized by more color and less intimidating features with the exception of Brutus’ Stormtrooper-like mask.
Meowscles has all white furand tight blue jeans. Peely has a classic white tuxedo with black pants. His eyes, which are normally round, have been changed to look like sunglasses. Midas has on a flashy white vest and has somehow turned completely gold, so he really stands out. Tntina has a white crop top that has a black heart on it that reads “bold” along with blue pants and a pink grenade belt on her right leg. Finally, Skye is the exception to the all white rule with a colorful adventurer’s outfit. In fact, Skye really seems to be the only character who steps outside both the Ghost and Shadow variant themes.

Original polls showed that Ghost skins would be preferred by the community, but that was not the case. Shadow skins won out in thefirst weeks of season 2 chapter 2. The Ghost skins are much brighter, flashier, and colorful than the shadow skins. Players were likely concerned with being more visible in the game and therefore opted against the Ghost skins. After all, skins like Midas' do turn out to look like shiny white and gold targets running over the landscape.

Shadow Faction Skins
These skins are characterized by dark tones and a more villainous motif than the Ghost variants. Because they are not as colorful as the Ghost skins, they stand out a little less in game. Shadow skins are also a bit more intimidating up close than the Ghost skins, sothe team at Epicmay be giving players more than one reason to choose Shadow over Ghost.
Meowscles has black fur and black pants with demon red eyes.Peely has come backto the game again but this time is wearing an all black tuxedo which arguably looks more agent like than the ghost variant. Brutus is also in all black, has a skull themed robber mask, and a skull on his backpack. Midas has on a very dapper all black shirt and vest combo, Tntina has on the same outfit as her ghost skin but it is all black and her shirt says “boom, and Skye again is the exception to the Shadow faction rule of dressing all in black. While her pants are black, she has a blue violet sweater around her waist as well as a blue violet shirt and gloves. She also has some pink on her hat’s ears and on the sword in her pack.
Most players have opted for shadow faction skins with the exception of a few Ghost variants that stand out. This is likely because the Shadow skins are more inconspicuouson the mapand are scarier up close. Some players, however, feel strongly that the Shadow skins are simply “cooler” than the Ghost skins and most of the time thats what picking a skin comes down to. Remember, once players pick a Ghost or Shadow variant, they can never attain the other, but that doesn’t mean they have picked that faction across the board. Each agent gives the option to choose a Ghost or Shadow variant.
How to Unlock Shadow or Ghost Skins
In the top left of the screen, there is a tab that leads players tothe agent’s section of the secret hideout. This is where players can select a Shadow or Ghost skin from individual agents. However, each skin has a countdown, which means not all skins can be unlocked initially.
Brutus is the first Shadow or Ghost skin players can unlock. To do this, players must complete 18 Daily Briefings, reach level 20 and have the Battle Pass. Once players have accomplished this, the agent will prompt them with a final mission. In Brutus’ case, it is to retrievesecret documents from the Yacht, the Rig, or the Sharkand bring them to a specific mailbox. It is very important that players deliver the secret plans to the specific mailbox associated with the faction they want; otherwise, they may get a skin they didn’t want and can’t go back. Once this is accomplished, players will receive the skin variant of their choosing and can apply it to their character.
It is very important for players to remember that these choices are final once they have made them. They do not apply across the board to Ghost or Shadow factions, meaning they can choose a shadow skin for one agent and then a ghost for another, but they are final once the decision is made, so choose wisely. After playingFortnitefor a bit, it is obvious thatmost people side with the shadow factionwhen it comes to Brutus but perhaps this could change as more agents are unlocked and their variants are available.
