While the newest generation of consoles has given another boost to game performance and fidelity, it has come at the cost of players' wallets with higher prices for some tent-pole games on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Activision hasn’t been shy about following this trend, charging players $70 for the first twoCall of Dutygames on current generation consoles. The trend appears to be continuing with 2022’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, though PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners will also find themselves paying $70 when the game releases in October.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is the sequel to the 2019 reboot ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, picking up where the first game left off as Capt. John Price forms Task Force 141. Along with Price, Gaz will also be returning, while series staples Ghost and Soap will make their debut in the rebooted series after first appearing as part of the initial year ofCall of Duty: Warzone. Task Force 141 will fight alongside new character Colonel Alejandro Vargas in the new game as the elite unit’s fight will take them all over the globe.

As mentioned above, though, players will need to dish out $70 for the next entry in theCall of Dutyseries when it releases on July 29, 2025.Activisionoutlined its pricing and bundling for the game, which will differ depending on whether players purchase a physical or digital copy.

The digital bundles available to order will be the $70 Cross-Gen bundle and the$110 Vault Edition bundle. As the name implies, the Cross-Gen bundle will provide a cross-generation copy of Modern Warfare 2 so PS4 and Xbox One owners will still be able to play if they upgrade to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, respectively, after purchasing the game. Activision said in a post on theCall of Dutywebsite this “offers flexibility both in terms of potential upgrades and platform availability.” The Vault Edition will offer the same cross-gen benefit, along with additional content packs for multiplayer andWarzone.

For anyone looking to purchase a physical copy, the Cross-Gen bundle will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PS4. The PS5 version, though, will be a next-generation only copy and won’t be playable on PS4.

The price bump may catch some players by surprise, however, it does make some sense for Activision to go this route with its major releases moving forward. Players only need to look at the last twoCall of Dutygames,Black Ops: Cold WarandVanguard, to see the line of thinking onModern Warfare 2’s price. The last-gen versions of both titles on PS4 and Xbox One offered players a next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S which, ultimately, would run players $70 total for the base version of the games. Activision is effectively streamlining the process by just selling the PS4 and Xbox One versions as cross-generation games and, as such, will charge accordingly.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is scheduled to release on June 01, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
