Summary
New Worldis Amazon Game Studio’s first attempt at making an MMO, mixing the crafting and gathering elements of classic Runescape with traditional third-person combat. The end result is a surprisingly robust third-person action game nestled into a genuinely massive online world where the economy is completely dictated by other players.
While the more straightforward controls may be easier to grasp for those who have never stepped into an MMORPG,New Worldcan still be downright daunting. There are a lot of mechanics to learn, things to see, and weapons to try. To help remedy this information overload, here’s a look at someNew Worldbeginner tipsthat players should consider when starting their journey.

Updated on June 21, 2025, by Nathan Halsey:At the time of writing New World: Aeternum has officially been launched on consoles with the release of New World: Aeternum. This comes with new servers, crossplay between all platforms, an island dedicated to PvP, and the game’s first 10-person raid. In addition to this, much of the early game has been reworked. The game now has a new intro sequence, as well as updated quests and cutscenes. The game’s graphics have also been tweaked, with earlier areas having much better lighting than in their original iterations. New World: Aeternum contains both the original base game and the Rise of the Angry Earth DLC that was released on October 3rd, 2023.
10Take Time to Try Every Weapon
These Will Dictate Your Role
New Worldis different than most traditional MMORPGs in that it doesn’t have classes, but instead lets players equip any weapon they meet the level requirement for. The caveat to this is that because weapons scale with player stats, and given that there are only so many Attribute points in the game, players will have to decide which weapons they want to be proficient in at the expense of others.
While this eventually forces players to consolidate into Tank, Damage, and Healing archetypes, this takes a long time to settle in, meaning there is tons of time to try out different weapons and playstyles. Also, because enemies drop more XP exponentially as they increase in level, it doesn’t take long for under-leveled weapons to catch up to extensively used ones. Try them all before it’s time to commit!

9Prioritize Complementary Trade Skills And Stick To Them
Make Coin and Valuable Gear
There area lot of Trade Skills and resourcesto be found inNew World, and unlike in other MMOs, there aren’t any restrictions on how many the player can undertake. There is a balance to this, however. Many resources and materials are used across professions, meaning that the more professions a player tries to level at once, the slower the process will become.
Players looking to craft specific gear for their character, or specific weapons, should see what profession those goods are listed under, and target the professions that not only make those goods but the ones that work the best together to produce those goods. Remember that the Archetype chosen in character creation will give a big boost to three specific professions.

8Take Time For Resources
Core to Boosting Trade Skills
Once a player has decided on their character’s crafting specialties, they need the materials to level those skills. Time, gear, and sometimes money are required to farm, gather, and refine the required materials. Keep in mind that the placement of resource nodes is static, meaning that specific resources will always show up in specific places. Additionally, certain areas are known for being more dense in specific materials.
There are plenty of interactive maps online to choose from, but with time players will get a feel for the best places to look when hunting specific materials. Daily faction quests often include gathering raw materials or resources of some kind, which is another good reason to get them finished.

7Understand Attributes
These Dictate Weapon Stats
When it comes to building a class inNew World, the key is knowing how to use and combine the Attribute scores. These are the stats that determine how well weapons perform, as well as granting unique passives in and out of combat.
There are only five Attributes in New World, making it more efficient than other RPG games, and only four of these are related to weapon use. Constitution determines the number of hit points a character gets and isn’t tied to any weapon use, but a player who takes a defensive or melee role needs to put extra points in this stat. Strength and Dexterity cover most of the weapons that physical damage dealers use, whileFocus and Intelligence cover the weapons with magical abilities.

6Pick Weapons That Compliment Each Other
Some Weapons Work Best With Others
Making a functional build inNew Worldwill mean choosing weapons that not only work together in a gameplay sense but scale to the same Attribute. Certain weapons only scale with certain Attributes, with some attributes scaling better than others.
Because of this, it’s important to make sure that both weapons scale off the same Attribute well. Not every weapon has the ability to scale 100% with each Attribute, but making sure that both weapons share an Attribute that they scale well with will greatly increase the efficacy of the weapon combination.

5Do Faction Missions Regularly
Earn Exclusive Gear and Perks
Players canpick one of three factionsas they progress through their journey, although it’s possible to do things without joining a faction. Once players have decided on which faction they want to represent, they need to be sure to take faction missions daily. The first time these missions are completed for a day, they offer a massive XP bonus. This can help players level quickly.
Faction Missions, which are snagged from the appropriate faction representative in each town, also reward players with Faction Points. These are used to purchase specific gear and weapons.

4Don’t Buy The Cheapest House First
First Purchase Discount
Owning a house is one of the coolest parts ofNew Worldbut many players make the mistake of purchasing the cheapest house as soon as they possibly can. The reason this isn’t recommended is that players get a large discount on their first home purchase, as much as 50 percent off.
It’s a much smarter and more economicalNew Worldbeginner tip for players to buy a larger home since they will receive such a deep discount on the purchase price and taxes. Larger homes come with better perks, allowing players to place more items, larger storage chests, and even fast travel to their location more often.

3Try Not To Craft In Towns Owned By Other Factions
Tax Money Goes to Specific Factions
New World’s endgame is built on warring factions that control towns and dictate how much players are taxed for a variety of services. Those that engage in crafting will have to pay a fee to the town and Companies that own these locations can decide how much they want to tax each Faction individually.
Sometimes it’s impossible to avoid crafting in another town or city that isn’t owned by their faction as players will need access to more advanced or larger crafting stations to build better items. For the most part, players can avoid paying obnoxiously high fees by sticking close to towns that are the same color on the map as their faction.

2Always Keep Food Readily Available
Food Grants Various Buffs
Food is important inNew World. Although food is considered a “buffing element” in other MMORPGs, it goes much further in Amazon’s open-world adventure. Players who regularly consume food and travel rations will receive the Well-Fed buff, which lasts for 30 minutes and is responsible for triggering health regen.
Players without the Well-Fed buff will notice that their health doesn’t actively regen unless they enter a town or rest at a campfire. There are additional foods that can boost stats but players should always have enough nourishment on them to keep their health-regen buff active.

1Enjoy The Journey
A More Traditional MMO Experience
Players may be tempted to attackNew Worldwith the same fervor as they do other MMORPGs. It’s tempting to rush into the release with the mindset of reaching the endgame as quickly as possible but the gameplay inNew Worldis designed to be more of a slow burn. Instead, players should sit back and enjoy the journey, leveling at their own pace and immersing themselves in the character they’re playing.
Amazon will likely start to push out a few more major updates and give players more endgame content to tackle. For now, players should simply enjoy the sights and enjoy the variety of classes and crafting options.
