Amazon’sNew World,an upcoming fantasy MMO, was showcased as part of Wednesday’s Gamescom Opening Night Live broadcast, during which aNew Worldtrailer was shown and the game’s upcoming open beta got a release date.New Worldwill fully launch on September 28, but before that MMO fans will get to try the game out for themselves in a September 9 open beta.

Officially, theNew Worldopen beta will run from September 9 through September 12, making it short but sweet. The open beta will be, as the name implies, open to all comers. It won’t require a pre-order or pre-purchase.MMO fanswill be able to download the game and play it as they like for the duration of the open beta. While aspects of the game could change between open beta and launch, the full game will be accessible. Note that all progress in theNew Worldopen beta will be erased prior to launch, as well.

Amazon also makes clear that the open beta is also serving as a stress test forNew World’s server infrastructure. Depending on the number of players that decide to try the game out during the open beta, servers could struggle. Of course, it’s better to struggle in open beta so that Amazon can adequately prepare for launch.

Accompanying the announcement ofNew World’s open beta was an in-engine cinematic trailer for the MMO. The trailer sets up thestory and lore ofNew World, introducing many of the conflicts that players can expect to discover in-game once they start playing. “I will say a prayer for the souls of your crew,” says a mysterious voice, hinting at the dangers that await players as they journey to theNew Worldand all that awaits on the island.

The premise of the game is also established in the cinematic trailer. The player journeys to theNew Worldfor treasure and adventure, but their ship is waylaid before they arrive at the island proper. Players will wash up on the shore of the island, where they’ll have to start their lives from scratch. It’s a prototypicalMMO origin story. Of course,New Worldhas a host of exciting storylines to follow from there that should keep players busy for a while yet.

Expect to hear plenty of other details regardingNew World’s upcoming open beta and its full launch in the weeks ahead.New Worldhas spent a long time in development and has gone through a lot of radical changes over the years. It’s going to be exciting to see exactly what kind ofMMO the team at Amazon has put together.
