Summary
Yu Yu Hakushois a relatively easy plot to follow as an anime adaptation. Yusuke Urameshi is a high school student who dies while rescuing a young boy. He’s not supposed to die though, so the god of the underworld, Koenma, makes a deal with Yusuke to revive him.
Yusuke has to become a Spirit Detective, which is basically a guardian of Earth who must fight against invading demons called Yokai. Season one leaves a lot of unanswered questions on the table, so let’s get into wrapping things up for Yu Yu Hakusho. There will be spoilers for season one, but nothing about the anime on which it is based will be spoiled beyond where this season goes.

6Where Did The Last Spirit Detective Go?
Yusuke Has Big Shoes To Fill
When Botan brings Yusuke to Koenma in episode one, he tells Yusuke that he wants to revive him. There is a condition in that Yusuke has to become a Spirit Detective for the underworld which is more than just solving cases likeConan fromCase Closed. Koenma also remarks that it has been a long time since the last Spirit Detective was in practice. That’s all that is ever said about it.
Viewers don’t know exactly how long it has been since the last Spirit Detective was in place or who it was. Fans of the anime know the character’s true identity, so maybe the next season or beyond will get into it. The identity won’t be spoiled here though but let’s just say it is one of the most explosive arcs in the anime.

5Will Netflix Add Some Filler Detective Content?
Yusuke Can Go Full Columbo
Yu Yu Hakushois one of the rare anime of the 90s withouta lot of filler. There are a handful of non-canon episodes but that’s it. It was a faithful adaptation of the manga that got in and out after a few years of airing on TV. Netflix could take this opportunity to slow things down after their success with their adaptation.
Why shouldn’t they start the next season with a filler arc? The premise is a solid one which is ultimately about a teenager who dies, comes back to life, and can then see ghosts and demons. It could be a procedural wherein he solves cases every episode which is not what the original work was about. Why call Yusuke a Spirit Detective if all he does is fight likeGoku inDragon Ball Zanyway? It’s one funny detail that some fans never got over.

4Does The Military Know Of Yokai?
Don’t People Have Phones Now?
The end of episode one is a wild one that takes place in three locations. Random Yokai from the underworld run away with sacred items of intense power. Gouki, Kurama, and Hiei all acquire these items after fighting the Yokai off.
Before they arrive, some force is fighting these Yokai off with guns. It’s dark out, so they’re never given much focus in the show. It can be presumed that it’s perhapsthe Japanese militarybut nothing comes of this after episode one. Could season two bring in some military people who either want to investigate or harness the power of the underworld to give Japan power?

3Will The Toguro Brothers Return?
Island Shenanigans
The Toguro Brothers have no known names in eitherthis live-action adaptationor in the anime. They are simply referenced as Elder Toguro and Younger Toguro. Both of them meet ill fates by the time season one wraps up.
Younger Toguro dies after fighting Yusuke which is what he wanted. He has to go to hell and he sees Genkai along the way and the meeting is amicable. The final shot of the season one shows the head of Elder Toguro alive and on a beach, as a seagull picks at him. Was this a setup for a joke or will Elder Toguro somehow pull himself together to break his brother out of hell in season two?

2Is Sakyo Alive?
Never Trust A Cutaway
Sakyo doesn’t do a lot in season one besides be menacing. He is technically the main villain that gets everything together. He wants that sinkhole to bridge the gap between the human world and the spirit world for nefarious purposes.
Heholds the tournamenton his island to distract the strongest heroes from interrupting the sinkhole process. Ultimately, his calm and collected villainous plans don’t work out. So, he decides to kill himself by putting a gun to his head. However, even though a gunshot is heard, the scene cuts away. Is he dead or not?

1The Trauma Of Having A Funeral While Alive
How Do You Explain This One?
One of the wildest things aboutYu Yu Hakushois the death of Yusuke. It’s quite graphic when the truck hits him which seemingly shows everything. It’s probably going to cause a few mouths to drop. Not everyone was sad about his death, but there was a funeral and everything.
Presumably, his mom, Atsuko, had to fill out paperwork concerning his death. Paperwork that seems hard to undo logistically. It’s great Yusuke didn’t die but having to explain to people what happened sounds like a nightmare. He has to lie too because he can’t admit he fights demons for a living now like some sort ofhigh school exorcist. It’s a bit nonsensical and it will be interesting to see if season two addresses this matter.
