Borderlands 3was the long-awaited sequel to the popular looter shooter series. AfterBorderlands 2, fans also got to enjoyThe Pre-SequelandTales From The Borderlands, which introduced new characters and plotlines that were integral to this universe. It seems that this is a world that is ever-expanding.

While the third game does have a disappointing story overall, it definitely didn’t lack in the world-building department. There are so many secrets to find and uncover within the game that give more insight into the characters and lore ofBorderlands. Here are ten things thatBorderlands 3taught us about its canon. Also, spoilers ahead.

10The Pre-Sequel’s Ending May Have Been Retconned

The Pre-Sequeltakes place before and afterBorderlands 2,with Athena narrating the events of the game. It ends on a huge cliffhanger where The Watcher, a being still not fully understood, warning the Vault Hunters of an imminent war. Sadly, this is never once mentioned inBorderlands 3.

Given the dire circumstances of that warning, one would think that Lilith would make it a priority. It’s totally possible that Gearbox scaled back on this story arc and decided to just scrap it altogether. Most of thePre-Sequelis canon to the series but it looks like this ending has been retconned, though that hasn’t been confirmed.

9Krieg Is Canon

Krieg was a DLC character added forBorderlands 2. Fans were wondering if Krieg was a canon character since the game started with four Vault Hunters. Thanks to some Echo logs, it’s now confirmed that Krieg is still part of the story.

The Echo logs actually develop his character more and his fight for sanity. Now, it appears that his inner thoughts fromBorderlands 2are now being said out loud, mixed in with his random psycho ramblings. Also, he’s good friends with Maya and he did not want her going to open the vault. Fans are hoping that he gets some sort of revenge mission in later DLC.

8Typhon Deleon Was The First Vault Hunter

Not much is known about Vault Huntersbut they’re a huge part of the series since you always play as one.Borderlands 3delves into what started the hunt for these vaults and lets us know that Typhon Deleon was in fact, the first Vault Hunter.

At first, his character is only heard from the Typhon Logs he left behind on his journey. Within the last act, he shows up and plays a prominent role in the ending. It’s revealed that he’s been on Nektrotafeyo, the homeworld of the Eridians, this whole time and has been trying to start up a machine that seals the vaults. Oh, and also, he’s Tyreen and Troy’s father.

7Sirens Can Imbue Memories Into Objects

In the side mission “Childhood’s End,” Tannis informs you that Sirens can actually imbue memories into everyday objects. This is put into motion when you find memories of Angel and her time with her father, Handsome Jack.

InBorderlands 2, Jack reveals that Angel did something horrible to her mother. In one of the many objects you listen to in the game, it’s revealed that Angel used her Phaseshift ability on a turret that accidentally kills her mother during a robbery. This is why Jack imprisons her and suppresses her powers.

6There Are More Handsome Jack Doppelgangers

During the Handsome Jackpot DLC, you run into Timothy Lawrence, the Doppelganger class you can play as inThe Pre-Sequel. At the end of the Handsome Jackpot, it seems that Timothy is now an important character within the series.

It turns out, however, that he wasn’t the only Doppelganger. It appears that Jack made multiple ones that not only look just like him but also share a bit of his DNA. This is why Timothy sometimes says some of Jack’s phrases like “kiddo.” According to Timothy, all the other Doppelgangers died on the casino. Still, he could be wrong and that means that there is another Doppelganger just waiting to show up.

5Handsome Jack May Have Married Into The Jakobs Family

One of the biggest mysteries within theBorderlandsuniverse is the identity of Jack’s first wife and Angel’s mother. During that “Childhood’s End” mission, you may come across a picture of Jack with his wife, except her face is scratched off, leaving you with no clues.

However, you’re able to actually find this exact same picture in the Jakobs manor. The odd thing is that her face is torn off in that one as well. It’s highly unlikely that Jack is a Jakob, which means that his wife must be then.  This also might explain why Jack has such a disdain for the Jakobs corporation.

4Siren’s Powers Are Passed Along

Given how Sirens are the rarest thing in the universe, one must wonder how one becomes a Siren. Originally, many thought they were just born a Siren.Borderlands 3states that Siren powers are passed along to someone else after that Siren dies.

This is why Ava becomes a Siren at the end, as well as Tannis inBorderlands 2. As of right now, the Siren powers the games have shown so far are Phaseleech, Phaselock, Phasewalk, Phasetrance, and Phaseshift. This means there are still two more powers that are still unknown.

3There Are 7 Sirens In The Universe, Not 6

Originally, it was said that only six Sirens can exist at any given time within this universe. Well, according to one of the many Eridian Writings that can be found throughout the game, there are actually seven. A seventh one that the writings warn to never find.

By the end ofBorderlands 3, the Sirens are Amara, Ava, Tannis, and Asha (from the comics but supposedly canon). It’s unclear whether or not Lilith is dead. If she is, then her powers went to someone else. Tyreen and Troy are for sure dead, which means a new Siren out there has the Phaseleech ability.

2Pandora Is A Vault

Even though this is a vast universe, it seems that everyone just wants to come to Pandora. This is odd considering it’s just a giant desolate wasteland of a planet. Players would soon find out towards the end of the game that Pandora is actually known as The Great Vault.

The Eridians created The Great Vault to imprison The Destroyer, a creature capable of bringing destruction to the universe. The only way to unlock The Great Vault is through Elpis, Pandora’s moon. This explains why so many Vault Hunters are drawn to Pandora as opposed to other planets.

1There Exists An Entity Known As The Timekeeper

This is something that many won’t even come across but it is stated in one of the Eridian Writings. One of the glyphs mentions something known as The Timekeeper. It’s extremely vague but with a name like that, it’s pretty easy to figure out what it does.

Not much is known who or what The Timekeeper is but perhaps it’s actually the seventh Siren. If The Timekeeper is capable of controlling time, let’s call it Phasetime, then that explains why The Traveller doesn’t want the Vault Hunters to find the seventh. This is just a theory but it definitely expands the lore even greater going into Borderlands 4 (if we ever get it).
