Doom Eternalhas a lot of fun references in it. And by a lot, we mean a REAL lot. Just considering how many differenttypes of secretsthere are in the game it’s amazing that Bethesda managed to include so much in a game thats meant to be played at mach speed. In fact, quite a few of the easter eggs and homages in this game are straight-up difficult to find! Players are already blasting through the game as fast as possible, but here are a few things we noticed people missing out on more than anything else.
10All That Easter Egg Literature
First and foremost is the Doom Guy’s “office” as we’ll call it. The dude apparently built his own little safe zone on the space castle that is chock full of references to tons of different game franchises likeQuake, Fallout,and evenHalf-Life. On these three relatively small shelves are probably over a hundred different cheeky references and we got to give credit to that sort of painstaking work for such a missable object in the hub world.
9The Legacy Of Daisy
There are quite a few Daisy-based references inDoom Eternal.For those somehow unaware, Daisy was Doom Guy’s rabbit that was tragically slain and had its head stuck on a pike at the beginning ofDoom 2.From the “Daisy Pics” on his computer to the empty cage under the desk, Doom Guy hasn’t even started to move on from his now-deceased pet. Honestly, there’s a rabbit wandering around that players can find in each level, and with where some of the rabbits are hiding, we have to imagine these are just hallucinations on the part of a mourning pet-owner.
8The Reference We All Expected To Be There
Terminator 2is quite a beloved film. In fact, what an understatement, because it’s probably one of the most often appreciated works of movie-making in the last few decades.

So, it’s safe to say that plenty of games, shows, films, and other sources of media have referenced it a fair bit, especially with the “thumbs up” Arnie does at the end as he melts.Doom Eternalis another example that doesn’t hesitate, and the Doom Slayer himself does the iconic thumbs-up whenever you somehow manage to die standing in lava,which is incredibly hard to do.
7The Secret Of Flynn Taggart
Did you know that theDoomgames had a series of novels based on them? Yeah, they were awful in a way thats hard to explain/. Basically, Demons weren’t demons anymore, they were aliens. If that doesn’t paint a picture of its quality, we don’t know what will. In any case, the name of the Doom Guy-like character in those books was Flynn Taggart, and only hyper fans would remember that. Well, in order to unlockDoom 2on the computer in Doom Slayers office, players need to enter a 12 character code, something that “flynntaggart” seems to work perfectly for.
6All The Classic Doom Textures And Design Inspirations
There is a lot of respect paid towards the classicDoomgames inDoom Eternal.That’s not to say that otherDoomgames didn’t, this one just went above and beyond. The designs of all the demons closely match their OG sprites, there are options for “Classic” sound effects and “classic” placement for your guns, and there are “classic” textures hidden throughout the game.

The most well-known one is that little island surrounded by lava that has an OG panel that players can interact with that has no real effect on the world. It’s obvious from all these homages that the developers ofDoom Eternalknow what made the original games great and they have a real love for the franchise as a whole.
5The Multiple Appearances Of The “Dope Fish”
The Dope Fish has been an in-joke for longtime video game developers over the years and has made appearances in many games. Originally, it was from the classicCommander Keengames that were what ID software was originally known for. According to the “lore” of those games, the Dope Fish is the second dumbest creature in the galaxy, and we can tell. The multiple appearances it makes in hidden areas ofDoom Eternalis the most hi-rez the creature has ever looked and it cemented the fact that some things just look worse with newer technology.
4Id Software Destroyed By Their Own Sin
Most of the other entries on this list appear multiple times or play a part through the entire level of a game, but this one doesn’t. No, this is an easter egg that is easy to miss and is just a cheeky little reference for those familiar withDoom’shistory. Of course, we know that ID software was the original mastermind behindDoom, and a captain should always go down with their ship. Well, inDoom Eternallore, they did, because (spoiler alert) their very own creation the Icon of Sin destroys their office in the last level of the game. It’s not a huge secret but it is cute, almost like if Nintendo included a run-down version of their Japan office inBreath of the Wildor something like that.
3Uh Oh, There’s A Gator In The Sewers
So this is the secret that’s very difficult to actually see. In fact, players only originally found that this even existed when they were replaying the level with cheat codes. Basically, in the Arc Complex level, there’s an area of the map where players have to platform over the purple goop (one of the worst parts of the game) that stops them from jumping.

If they manage to look underneath the final platform in the room fast enough, they’ll see a fleeing alligator/crocodile. Why is it there? Why is it so hard to see? Why can’t players interact with ti? We have no idea, but it’s for sure one of the easiest references in the game to miss.
2References To The Dev Team
Doomgames are historically famous for referencing the staff in-game, outside of the credits of course. The classicDoom 2has a JPEG of John Romero that is the actual hitbox that kills the Icon of Sin,Doom 64had an Easter Egg that threw shade at the map maker for the game, andDoom Eternalhas a few cheeky references as well. One is the QA staff credits for “Quality Excellence” that can be found on a TV throughout the game and the other is the reference to creative director Hugo Martin who apparently is the CEO behind the Gulami’s Dried Meat Pieces you can find in the convenience store in Mission 6. Both of these references are adorable yet equally harmlessly rude.
1Quake Con Mode Cheers
And finally, we included this one simply because not many people know it exists until they beat the game. The Cheat Codes inDoom Eternalare a pretty nifty system, as they allow players to effectively cheat and have fun while cleaning up collectibles on levels they’ve already beat. But, what people might not know is that there is a final cheat code that only unlocks once you fully upgrade the Praetor Suit. This is called Quake Con Mode, and it basically functions like the Grunt Birthday Party Skull from theHalofranchise where an imaginary crowd cheers you on as you rip & tear through the hell demons.
