The campaign which takes place during the Cold War of the ’80s has players questioning whether what they’re seeing is real. There are new faces to the story as well as a few familiar and iconic characters. In between the new and the old is a story with many details not seen at first glance. With that being said, there are potential spoilers in this list.
10"You Remember Mason?"
The very first mission of aCall of Dutycampaign is meant to set the tone for the rest of the story that plays out through the game. The tone of the first mission inBlack Ops: Cold Waris very similar to that of the firstBlack Ops, and that tone is set right at the start. The mission opens up with some dialogue between two people: Russell Adler and iconic soldier Alex Mason. Players then see a lighter flick and a flame and then a fade to Mason and Adler in a bar. A man walks up to them, prompting Adler to utter the three words that started it all: “You Remember Mason?”
9Scarface
Russell Adler takes up a lot of space in the story ofBlack Ops: Cold War. Being an intriguing character right from the first trailers definitely warrants some more attention, especially given the hard-to-miss scar across his face. While he never gives a consistent answer when asked about it by the player, there is one thing interesting about it. He doesn’t have it in the mission Fracture Jaw which takes place 13 years before the events ofBlack Ops: Cold War. This raises a lot of questions as to when, where, what, and how the scar appeared.
8Man In Black
The Cold War in real life and the Cold War in the titularCall of Dutygame both have peoplehiding in shadows, either too paranoid or too clever to be discovered. One such character is Black who only speaks to Jason Hudson and US President Ronald Reagan. Essentially nothing is known about Black other than the fact that he works with the CIA and is potentially involved with Project MKUltra. His own pseudonym is hidden unless players turn on subtitles in the game’s settings.
7World Champions
Typically, when there is a TV in video games, it shows some generic and extremely blurred footage of a sports game or a news report. InBlack Ops: Cold War’s case, this is also true.

What is interesting about TVs in the campaign, however, is that they are most likely showcasing a real-life soccer game that took place during the same year as the events ofBlack Ops: Cold War. The 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship was won by then West Germany which is also near where some of the missions in the game take place.
6Mark The Calendar
Each mission in the campaign has pieces of hidden intel and evidence that help gives more context to the story and even play parts in the progression of the story. One piece of evidence found in the Fracture Jaw doesn’t play that significant of a role, however, it is fascinating the small details added to it. The piece of evidence is a calendar used to organize the events and responsibilities of the soldiers stationed in Da Nang. Again, the writing on the calendar shows nothing significant, but it is nice to know that the soldiers get a little R&R during Christmas time.
5Unexpected Guest
It is known throughout the gaming community, specifically theCall of Dutycommunity, that theBlack Opsseries and the Modern Warfare series keep their stories fairly separate.

NoModern Warfarecharacters have appeared in the storyline of anyBlack Opsgames and vice versa, until now. In the mission Desperate Measures, Dimitri Belilkov, a double agent in the KGB, is summoned to the conference room. There, Belilkov comes face-to-face with Imran Zakhaev, the main antagonist ofCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. What this means is yet to be seen, but it is still fascinating nonetheless.
4Burger Town
Imran Zakhaevis not the only thing from the Modern Warfare series that has made an appearance in Black Ops: Cold War. In the mission Redlight, Greenlight, players will enter a secret Soviet installation where they are training for an invasion of the United States. the simulation takes place in a reconstruction of a typical American town. In this reconstruction, the popular and fictional fast food chain, Burger Town, has a building located in this town. Woods even makes a comment about the restaurant upon approaching it.
3For The Bold
Although Burger Town is fictional, Doritos is not. The international chip brand has a billboard that sits right next to the Burger Town restaurant.

While this is somewhat unexpected, it does make sense given that Doritos and Call of Duty have a strong connection and have frequently collaborated with each other. What is also interesting is that the billboard shows Doritos' original logo which they used at the time in which the game takes place. The Doritos logo can be seen in other missions throughout the game as well.
2Target Practice
Staying in the mission Redlight, Greenlight, the Soviet training simulation has many targets that the soldiers were used for practice. However, these targets are not just for show. They can actually be shot down by the enemies, Woods, and even the player. Once the targets are shot or damaged in any other way, they fall down. Shooting them doesn’t hold any major purpose, but it is cool to see the ever-presentattention to detailthat game developers exercise in their products.
1Mountain Dew
Everyone is familiar with the collaboration of Doritos and Mountain Dew as well as the collaboration of those two products and Call of Duty. Doritos made an appearance in Black Ops: Cold War, so one would think that Mountain Dew would make one as well.In the missionOperation Chaos, players are sent to New Mexico to intercept and possibly kill a rogue, ex-CIA agent. Players can see a can of Mountain Dew next to the TV once they enter and the hotel room in which the agent is hiding.
